The ability of the workers to belong to trade union is a human basic right. The role of the trade union is negotiate and communicate with the employer on behave of the employee. The collective bargaining enables the employees to provide their terms and conditions to the trade unions so that they may negotiate on their behalf. The trade unions have been on the decline in the United States. The present economic downturns make it very hard for the survival of the trade unions (Talk of the Nation, 2013).
Section 1
Types of workers not in the collective bargaining rights
All the employees have the right to belong to a trade union. However, there are some workers who are not allowed to be parties to the collective bargaining in United States and they include the government workers; independent contractors; fashion models; domestic workers and the agricultural laborers such as the farm workers (Talk of the Nation, 2013).
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
The employees not included in the collective bargaining rights are members of the non-union labor groups such as the domestic workers, farm laborers and the independent contractors.
Advantages of the non-union labor groups
One can be able to pay a laborer in a non-union labor group the amount of wage that he can afford. This is unlike an employee who belongs to a union labor in which the collective bargaining agreement has already set the minimum wage for each region in United States. The employee in a non-union labor group can be easily identified and promoted either through pay rise or using other motivational strategies. In addition, the non-union labor groups enable the company to compete fairly both in the domestic and international market. Further, the employer can be able to handle the problems of the workers internally without the employees participating in a strike. On the other hand, employees in a trade union get better pay compared to their counterpart in non-union labor groups. In addition; they also get benefits such as retirement and health insurances (Talk of the Nation, 2013).
Section 2
I was surprised that most members of the unions are educated and nearly half (54.4%) possess an associate degree or higher level of education (Bivens et al , 2017). In addition most union members belong to the public administration industries (13.9%), transport (12.2%) and manufacturing (9.1%) sectors.
The trade unions offer a lot of benefits to the employee. They help in employees to contribute to the policy debates. Also, they help to remove the inequalities at the work place and they also assist the low and the middle wage workers to be paid fair wages. They also help in ensuring that women are paid a fair wage and also help in ensuring workers from different cultural and racial are paid well. They also help in improving the working conditions of the employees and also safeguard the workers retirement security (Bivens et al , 2017).
The main role of the unions is to raise the wage of worker in union and non- union groups. (Bivens et al , 2017).
The trade unions put pressure on the employers to raise the wages of their employees. The members of the trade unions point their union leaders who bargain with the representatives of the employers. This is achieved by the trade unions obtaining monopoly of the services needed by the employers (Driffill & Van der Ploeg, 1993).
Section 3: Choice A
The contract workers are a growing work force in thin United States are on contract which allows them to work in a project for a certain period of time. Research shows that 20% of the American workforce is workers on contract. It provides the employee with flexibility and they can also become their jobs. The employees can also work for more than one company (Morning Edition, 2018).
Most workers on contract report that their pay is low and their jobs are unpredictable. In addition, their job does not come with benefits such as the retirement or health insurance. In addition majority of the contract employees do not get a pay rise (Sullivan, 2018). The aim of the employer in contract jobs is to make good use of the employee when the economy is good. On the other hand, when there is an economic downturn, the contract of the employee is not renewed. The male gender greatly affected when the contract comes to an end as they make up a majority of the workers on contract. Another challenge of the workers on contract is that they are not covered by the Civil Rights Acts which makes them to be susceptible to discrimination such as gender and race (Berliner, 2018).
