In a nutshell “Babylon revisited” is a story of a Charlie wales, a former zombie who returns to Paris shortly after the stock market crash of 1929. Charlie sees the world with new and sober eyes and he is shocked and appalled by the extravagance that characterized his former life. The story is deeply rooted in the financial turmoil of its time. In the book, Charlie demonstrates a number of character traits which include loving, caring, reformist, remorseful and spendthrift among others. Charlie is a reformed man since he is reluctant to have a second cocktail as requested by his drinking peers. He strictly sticks to his words and he suggests that he is serious about becoming a new man. In addition, Charlie is remorseful since he is sad and traumatized by the way he used to act in a reckless way as clearly manifested in these passengers: “all the catering to vice and waste was on an utterly childish scale” (1:56). Nonetheless, the passage also suggest that Charlie was a spendthrift who spent his time socializing and drinking.

The themes of naturalism and modernism are clearly depicted in the book “Neighbor Rosicky” by Willa Cather. The naturalism theme manifests itself when Rosickydemise was caused by his hard work in his son’s farm. Although Rosicky was a hard worker, the social and environmental forces affected his life negatively particularly his health. In addition, modernism was prevalent inmid-1930 where traditional ideas were eliminated and U.S began to identify its interests with the interests of big business. Throughout 1930’s,the economic reforms programs were established to alleviate poverty and help farmers who were suffering under depression.
