Theme for English B by Langston Hughes
The essay’s thesis is racism. The student does not directly refer to it as racism but writes about the only black student in a class where everyone else is white. The thesis is clear to as it is drawn from the poem Theme for English B by Langston Hughes (Hughes, 2013). The thesis and the essay establish skin color and racism as the measure which the speaker uses as the main theme of his poem. However, the thesis is not as clear as it is supposed to be. In the essay, the thesis is “it also refers to the fact that he is the only black student in the class, and that he now lives in Harlem.” This thesis statement does not clearly define what the student wants to specifically talk about. The paragraphs are organized around a key point. For example, the second paragraph talks about the speaker’s struggles in a class of whites and the choice of his topic for the assignment. However, the main idea does not come as a topic sentence in some paragraphs. In the fifth paragraph, the main idea comes in the second line.
Each main point is supported by a quote from the poem. The points are explained and analyzed and explained clearly. Regardless of this, there are still points that need improvement. There is need for the student to use quotes that relate to the point that they are talking about. For example, in paragraph four the quote used does is not clearly related to the speaker’s desire to study and achieve more. In my opinion, the author left out a crucial aspect of the poem, the speaker’s claim that he (him) and the teacher learn from one another. That is not clearly stated; it is important because the speaker finds something beyond the skin color on which they have hope for the future.

The Passionate Shepherd to His Love by Christopher Marlowe
The thesis for this essay is derived from this statement; “ this poem is about a young shepherd asking his love to come and be with him so they can be happy and be together.” It is a clear thesis and shows the interpretation of the poem. The poem is about a lover who is calling on his fiancée/fiancé to come and stay with him so that they can be happy together. The poem from which the author is analyzing is, The Passionate Shepherd to His Love by Christopher Marlowe (Marlowe, 2013). The thesis is specific since the author clearly indicates what they want to discuss.
The paragraphs are organized around main points; most of them explaining the love that the speaker has towards his lover, the promises he makes to his lover and the calls he makes for his lover to join him so that they can live together. The author supports his arguments with a quotation from the text of the poems except for the second last paragraph where he provides none. In this paragraph, he explains the point he wants to put across but it is not backed up with text from the poem. This makes it necessary for him/her to improve on such; it makes it easier for one to understand a point when it is clearly referenced from the primary source.
I fail to agree with the author; he does not analyze the shepherd’s value for the lover. In the poem, the shepherd says, “With buckles of the purest gold” (Marlowe, 2013; line 17). This statement shows the love that the shepherd has. Gold is considered expensive and a gift of material made of gold means someone really values one a lot. The author can improve on the quotation of the primary source. They need to use as many quotes as possible to elaborate the points they want to pass across.
