The Autobiography of Malcom X as Told to Alex Haley

Question 1: What inspired Malcom X to educate himself?

The main thing that inspired Malcom X to educate himself was the difficulty he faced when he was trying to convey his messages in letters. He was frustrated by the fact that he was able to command attention as a street hustler but he could not express himself in letters. He also envied Bimbi in the Charlestown Prison who dominated every conversation due to his command of English (Haley, 2007). Consequently, Malcom X started using the library to master English language. He wanted to write eloquent letters. 

Question 2: Using your personal knowledge of world history, what aspects of it affirm or contradict Malcolm's depiction of the racist role of the West?

Malcom believed in the superiority of black people, which made him a champion for their rights. At the same time, he believed in equality of all races. However, based on history, black people were regarded as inferior to whites. Interestingly, even some black people believed in the superiority of the whites. Therefore, Malcom’s depiction of black superiority contradicts racist roles of the west (Haley, 2007).

Question 3: Compare Malcom's approach to the racial problem with Martin Luther King Jr.

Malcom and Luther King Jr had different approaches to the racial problem. In order to reduce hatred and violence between blacks and whites, King Jr believed that it was important for all races to come together. On the contrary, Malcom believed that the integration between whites and black would destroy the latter racial group. Malcom emphasized that black should focus on helping one another and respect their race. In addition, Luther King Jr was violent in championing for racial equality while Malcom used non-violent approach (Haley, 2007). However, they both believed that blacks were discriminated and needed to champion for their freedom.

Question 4: Discuss Ella's role in the various stages of Malcolm's life.

Ella played a significant role in the life of Malcom because she was more of a mother to him than a friend. Ella always wanted the best for Malcom. It was because of Ella that Malcom managed to move to the nice prison where he could read and participate in a debate. She also ensured that Malcom moved to Detroit in order to avoid trouble after being released in prison (Haley, 2007). She also gave him money to go to Mecca where Malcom completely transformed his life. Ella helped Malcom on key stages of his life.
