The battle of Antietam is credited for one of the events that mark a great history in American history. This is because of aiding in making it possible for President Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, thus ensuring freedom for all Americans. The outcome of the battle resulted in a victorious union, which made it possible for President Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Declaration. Today, every American enjoys the right to freedom, which is among the positive social impacts of the battle of Antietam. If the battle was not successful, maybe former President Lincoln would not have been able to issue the emancipation proclamation; thus there would still exist slavery. Slavery has more negative implications than positive ones, thus a social advancement that resulted from the battle of Antietam (Scott Hartwig, 2014).
Other than resulting in a victorious Union, the battle of Antietam, also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg, was fought on 17th September, 1862 in Sharpsburg, Washington County, Maryland during the American civil war. Led by generals George McClellan of the Union and Robert E. Lee of the Confederate army, the battle of Antietam took place in various locations such as Miller’s cornfield, west woods, and east woods. Both the union and Confederate army sent in their soldiers to actively participate in the battle of Antietam with a total of 75,300 soldiers from the union and 52,000 soldiers from the Confederate army. The battle resulted in both union and Confederate casualties amounting to 12,400 and 10,300 respectively (Scott Hartwig, 2014).

In conclusion, this event was significant and is still since it is the memory upon which Americans look up to. Especially to Africa-Americans who descended from slaves, the significance and source of their freedom that makes every citizen in the U.S. enjoy equal rights as every other citizen.
