Why is it so hard to delegate?

Delegation of duty requires the increased use of critical thinking skills for both the person delegating and the helper. Delegation in the healthcare sector remains a challenge because the healthcare setting has undergone increased complexity of nurses and patients, and nursing practitioners are not fully equipped with the relevant skills for delegating (Cipriano, 2010).

How will I know what and to whom to delegate?

The tasks that can be delegated are those which are not urgent or critical. Before delegating tasks, we should be sure of the deadlines and the quality of result needed as well as what the task entails and the possible results. Tasks or duties can be delegated to team members who need skill development (Weydt, 2010).

What blocks you from delegating?

Sometimes it becomes difficult to delegate tasks or duties to subordinates due to fear of underperformance. A practitioner may feel reluctant and less compelled to delegate when they feel the person delegated to will not perform to the required standards (Cipriano, 2010). Besides, successful delegation process relies on communication style, personality, and cooperation, and therefore, one may have adequate skills to perform a delegated task but may lack one of the mentioned qualities.

What are two ways to assess the outcomes of what I have delegated?

The first means to assess an outcome is by monitoring the progress of each task. Progress reports can help determine the extent a delegated work has been done. Furthermore, the person delegating can set up recurring meetings to confirm commitment and understanding of the project by the helper.

How will I handle a refusal of the delegation?

Occasionally people may refuse to carry out tasks delegated to them. When such situations arise, the best course of action is to handle the task to successful completion. Try to understand the reason for refusal and if need be share with a higher authority (Weydt, 2010).
