The Benefits of Yoga on Stress, Anxiety, and Depression

Introduction

Stress, anxiety, and depression are among the leading perennial health care challenges in the modern world. On the one hand, the vagaries of life make the propensity for the above health challenges common and persistent. On the other hand, when these challenges are not properly managed, they often lead to serious psychological, mental health, and social problems including substance abuse and mental illness (Gillihan, 2016). Among the available solutions for the above challenges is yoga, which can be defined as a set of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines geared towards relaxation and mindfulness which originated from India (Dhikav, 2016). Yoga is a suitable remedy for stress, anxiety, and depression as it is not only effective but also readily available, and cost effective. 

Effectiveness

Available research and expert analysis have reflected yoga as being effective in the mitigation of stress, anxiety, and depression. First, yoga interrupts worry cycles by clearing the mind during the pendency of the exercise (Gillihan, 2016). Stress, anxiety and depression result when worry is persistent and chronic hence interrupting worry is an effective mitigation. Yoga also enables an individual to accept discomfort as it includes trying to relax under physically exerting postures and conditions. Accepting discomfort is critical to alleviating stress, anxiety, and depression. Finally, yoga encourages relaxation and elimination of muscle tension (Gillihan, 2016). Muscle tension is among the critical ways that psychological issues affect the physiological processes hence yoga prevents psychological issues from manifesting physical symptoms. Based on the above, yoga is beneficial because it is effective.

Readily Available

Another primary benefit of Yoga is that it is readily available almost anywhere and at any time, and can thus enable mitigate stress, anxiety, and depression before they worsen (Sisk & Fonteyn, 2016). The impacts of stress factors that result in stress, anxiety, depression worsen with time, more so when they are not properly mitigated (Yang et al., 2017). Therefore, even a very effective solution for the same would not assist a patient unless it is readily available as and when the patient needs it. Yoga is simple enough to be readily available at home, work, school, or even while traveling (Sisk & Fonteyn, 2016). It will thus be available to help as and when it is needed, thus making it beneficial for intervention in stress, anxiety, and depression. 

Cost Effectiveness

Another primary benefit of yoga that makes it extremely suitable for intervention in stress, anxiety, and depression is its cost-effectiveness (Dhikav, 2016). The US healthcare system is among the most expensive in the world, including psychological care, due to its advanced nature (Kesselheim, Avorn & Sarpatwari, 2016). Conversely, most stress factors have a pecuniary perspective, having been caused by a lack of money. An expensive solution for stress, anxiety, and depression will only become another stress factor, no matter how effective it is since the patient will remain worried about how to foot the bills. Further, the poor have a higher propensity for stress, anxiety, and depression. Yoga is almost free of charge since, after the basic training, the patient can carry it out privately and at no cost (Dhikav, 2016). The cost-effective nature of yoga makes it bypass other solution like clinical and pharmacological interventions that may better proofs of efficacy. 

Conclusion

The above makes it clear beyond peradventure that yoga is the most beneficial mitigation for stress factors and the resultant stress, anxiety or depression. First, there is definitive evidence of the effectiveness of yoga in mitigating the three psychological challenges abovementioned. Secondly, being readily available makes it possible to use yoga to mitigate the said challenges at the earliest, making it more effective in intervention as the problems will be extenuated before they have adverse effects on the patient. Finally, yoga is cost-effective which makes it available for the rich and the poor alike without creating additional stresses in healthcare bills. Based on the totality of the above, yoga is a fitting and the most beneficial remedy for stress, anxiety, and depression.
