I conducted covert participation on a local public park. The public park is covered with grass in almost every part and with scattered trees unevenly. There are benches that are located in strategic areas for people that may choose not to sit on the ground. Dust bins are the evident things that are found especially at the edge of the area. Different people of all walks of life visit the park for different reasons. There were families, individual sleeping on the ground, people holding meeting, persons collecting junk and papers, a person cutting grass, people eating fast foods, person taking photos and so forth. The time I visited the park was in the afternoon between 1p.m and 3p.m. There were a lot of different activities that were in progress at that particular time.
I noticed that some people use the public park as a place of meeting. On the benches there were different people that sat on them most on their phones. Others just gazed around observing other people. These people would later be joined by other persons that they seem to know because they blend in well: long conversations and hugging. However, most of the people seated on the bench were communicating with their phones often and after a while they were joined by other people. “ A person seated on the bench makes a call and later joined by a female counterpart.”
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
I also noticed that some people use the public park as place to relax. On the ground that was mostly covered by grass, there were persons that were either seated or taking a nap. People were distributed all over the place as each person or group choose any convenient place. Some people were taking snapshots and photographs. Some were listening to music via their earphones thus no distraction. Most of the people were not disturbed by other people being around them. “At the far East corner of the park were two persons ( a male and female) taking naps separately. Just beside them were two men seated chatting.”
Another observation I made is that some people use the public park to enjoy quality time with friends/families. I could see actions of bonding between people were such as people holding hands, hugging and in one case kissing. Mostly in groups, persons that were in jovial mood-from their laughers, young and old would be seen together. In those groups, the young ones would be seen playing around the perimeter of the public area but would eventually get back into the groups. Women breast feeding the children was observable action. “Men holding the women in the groups closely suggested they were wife and husband. “
Another inferences I made from the study is that people use the public park to chat with friends. There were a lot of talking happening in the public park. Some seemed to be engaged in casual conversation because they would not shy from continuing a conversation when other persons sat next to them. Persons would be seen shouting at each other, laughing out a loud and discussing for long as well as short conversation. “ Three people were arguing with one raising hands in the air, another shouting while the other one was trying to calm them down.”
In conclusion, all of the activities: chatting with friends, enjoying quality time with the families and friends, relaxing, and even meeting one another shows that public park is a place of freely interaction. Although the activities are different, the people are doing so for the sole reason to derive the public social benefit offered by the park.
