Crime is a reality in society and a force to reckon. Yearly, we record many attempted criminal cases to the police. We talk a lot about criminals and why they have engaged in crime whenever they are found out. However, it is worth investigating what really drives the criminal into acting as they do and making such decision that risk the lives of thousands of people. Better still; finding out the personal protection measures against crime is an important aspect this paper tries to highlight.

In as much as governments and other agencies are working hard to prevent crime, it cannot stop or end in a day. Personal measures for protection against crime are necessary so that the impact due to the consequences of crime can reduce. One of the most effective and widely used methods of self-protection is target hardening. Target hardening involves making it difficult for criminals to access a home or business. This may involve installation of security cameras for surveillance; use of locks; barricading the entrance by using of guards or receptionist, or doorkeeper; warning signs; window bars; and dogs. All these measures are necessary for self-protection against crime.

Furthermore, I would fight back to protect against property loss. This involves becoming resistance to attack by criminals by being ready to fight them back. This may scare them however much risky that may be. The good thing with fighting back is that, it makes it difficult for the criminals to accomplish their violent attack since the victim will already have countered their plan. If a criminal begins assault when I have already surrendered, then am left with no other option but fight back.

Better still, using weapons is a good way to protect against criminals. Some criminals require aggressive measures to distract and that includes use of weapons. It helps in protection against injury and loss of property. Mounting an injury to the criminal will scare him and he may run away for his life. Research indicates that most criminals are killed and injured by the citizens who protect themselves against their forceful deeds.

All Criminal decisions are a function of rational thinking. The criminal often plays his cards in order to seek personal gratification and gain without thinking about the interests of others. Criminals take a lot of time to plan for the crime, they assess all risks and benefits involved, and then they act after being convinced that whatever action they want to undertake is of much benefit to them than disadvantageous. In all these, they do not bring to the limelight the other people. They only focus on themselves. It therefore goes without saying that the final act of crime or violence is an act of rational thinking and decision making. These decisions are made out of greed, anger, revenge, jealousy, lust, and need. But regardless of the motivation for crime, all criminals put their interests ahead of others knowing very well the serious consequences that their actions can bring to them.

Before arriving at the decision to commit a crime, the offender highly evaluates the risks involved and thus is well aware of what they are getting into. They know very well that their decision and action could lead to their arrest and being punished; losing respect from friends and family; and taint their reputation. However, in the wake of these realities, a criminal still thinks that the pleasure acquired from a single criminal act outweighs the consequences and thus they go ahead and get involved. The evaluation is therefore very intensive since the criminals are aware of their illegal motives and the risks involved.
