The complaints against the British government can be summed as a rejection of taxation without representation. In 1767, the British government enacted the Townshend Act to introduce duties on goods such as glass, paper, and tea and increase British control of colonialists. The resistance against taxation increased in 1773 after the legislature enacted the Tea Act to grant East India Company a monopoly in the American tea trade (Brinkley, 1995). In response, members of the Boston Tea Party led a rebellion against the British government, leading to the destruction of the company’s property and boycotting of products by locals. Colonists were also opposed to the intolerable Acts of 1774 that closed the harbor, increased the powers of the Massachusetts governor in using the military to stop the rebellion, and cushioned British officials against prosecution ( Henry, 2010) . Similarly, the tea party of 2010 raised complaints against moves that threaten US sovereignty, security, and tranquility (Brinkley, 1995). The party calls the government to reduce income and business tax, stop deficit budget funding, stop bailout stimulus, illegalize aliens, strengthen the military, downsize government, and protect gun ownership.
Although the tea party of 2010 raises some legitimate questions about the future and quality of life in the US, there exists a definitive difference between the Boston tea party and the tea party of 2010. The Boston Tea Party opposed the imposition of taxes to support the army, excessive use of force to quell their rebellion, and unequal treatment of British officials who were entitled to trial in Britain (Brinkley, 1995). On the other hand, the tea party 2010 complaints involve disputable issues such as illegalizing aliens, protecting gun ownership, and reducing tax (Brinkley, 1995). While the Boston tea party complaints touched on fundamental rights against colonial suppression, mainly touching on heavy taxation on tea, the tea party 2010 complaints are not universally accepted and need careful consideration.
