Once a catastrophe in the East, the Black Death hit the shores of Italy in 1348; triggering a death rampage across the entire Europe. The epidemic lasted for three years, leaving approximately 25-50% of the European population victims of the pestilence. The Black Death is a catastrophic disease caused by a bacterium known as Yersinia pestis (Science Museum, 2016). It has been dubbed as one of the deadliest plagues of humankind ever. Many people fell victims to the pestilence because of scarce information that was available during that time pertaining the disease.

As a Spanish leader of the Toledo town in 1348, I would call for greater action once the plague is dictated in neighboring towns. I would immediately convene a crisis meeting with health professionals to meditate on measures that would ensure the disease does not spread out to the town. Some of the likely measures that I will consider so as to protect the Toledo town from the pandemic are as follows.

The first step will be the implementation of quarantine and isolation policy. The move will help safeguard the public from mixing with persons who may have been exposed to the disease. This step is prompted by communicable nature of the plague. Also, non-residents from the affected areas would be denied entrance into the Toledo. However, for the residents who may have visited the affected areas would be strictly monitored for several weeks before they can join the families. During this period, these persons will be in pure isolation, preventing them from direct contact with the public.

Following the strong religious population of the town, it is quite of the great essence for both the Muslims and Christians to engage in intercession prayers. These prayers from both dominant religions of the town will be a significant step towards bringing unity in the fight against the plague.

Another critical step will be to clear bushy and unhygienic areas. Such areas are notorious for hiding wild rodents and act as their habitat. Ensuring hygiene and cleaning up these areas would provide unfavorable conditions for the rodents to thrive. Since rodents are known to be the host of the bacteria, eliminating them will prevent the bacterium from spreading. Lastly, I will join forces with leaders in both already infected and uninfected towns to come up with strategies on how to help put an end to the already pestilence. Ensuring the well-being of occupants of neighboring towns will be ensuring the welfare of the town of Toledo.

In establishing these methods in the town and its neighbors, I will have guaranteed the safety of the Toledo residents. Black Death will no longer be a catastrophic disease, and more lives will be saved. Its cure might be at large, but its prevention is within our power.
