Before the year 2000, it is evident that the blacks in America had engaged in different activities that set the stage for the movement "Black Lives Matter." Among these pivotal movements is the Montgomery Bus Boycott instigated by Rosa Parks and her arrest, the murder of Emmett Till in 1955, the protests in Birmingham in 1963 and Race Riots in 1967("TimelineJS Embed," 2019). In the bus boycott of 1955 lasted for more than a year before Parks was released.
The Black Lives Matter Movement an activist organization led by the Blacks in the United States operating internationally in campaigning against the violence and racism against black people. The movement originated from the African American community. Evidently, the movement was instigated through social media users that were fed up by the injustices and unequal treatment of the black Africans especially after the acquittal of George Zimmerman (a white police officer) involved in the shooting of Trayvon Martin who was of the African American descent (‘Black Lives Matter’, 2019). The activist movement engages in protests against police brutality, injustices propagated by American institutions and racial inequalities in the criminal justice system of the United States.

The Black Lives Matter movement has encountered backlash by the White-dominated society. The backlash is evident in the rhetorical manifestations of the use of slogans of "All Lives Matter" ad the "Blue Lives Matter." The white-dominated society has declared war and opposition on the BLM movement by emphasizing that the lives of all people matter not only the blacks. In this case, the "All Lives Matter" slogan is a backlash against the BLM because it erases the inequalities of the American institutions and acknowledges that the institutions value the lives of all Americans. Therefore, the movement contradicts with the BLM; thus portraying the current resistance and opposition against the mission of the BLM. Another instance is noted in the tweets of the current president of the US, Donald Trump implying that Blacks are responsible for 92% and 82% of black and white murders ("The backlash against Black Lives Matter…", 2019). The figures by the president are wrong, and they portray the dislike and opposition against the mission of the BLM.
Psychologists confirm that the rage and increased protests by civil rights movement in the US are a response to continued oppression. The professionals explain that oppressing man for long results in resistance as noted in the case of the white-dominated community oppressing the blacks. The other type of social scientists that have long debated on the BLM is sociologists. Sociologists have shown great concern regarding the events that led to the formation of BLM, especially police brutality ("The backlash against Black Lives Matter…” 2019). The sociologists consider the events as social injustices that deserve to be condemned and therefore, they support the mission of BLM. Similar to sociologists, gerontologists and anthropologists have confirmed their support for activism against the violation of human rights and discrimination.
The potential controversies emerging from the civil rights movement include politicization and the emergence of other movements such as "All Lives Matter." The civil rights movement is being politicized making it difficult to solve the problem of discrimination and racial injustices. President Donald Trump backlashes the BLM and other black movements on his social media accounts. Additionally, the emergence of applying the "All Lives Matter" slogan has since created a rift between the Whites and the Blacks. This makes it difficult for the two sides to solve the problem amicably.
The solution for racial discrimination, injustices and police brutality lies in the implementation of equitable law in all institutions. The injustices should be halted by making changes to the justice system and encouraging reconciliation and cohesion among the black community and the whites. The current policies should remain, but the emphasis should be on the violators of the policies. Initiating a national reconciliation and cohesion program will help the problem to be resolved with ease. The social media industry, the education sector, and the justice system should be the primary industries and institutions that would salvage the situation.
