Boston Massacre of March Fifth, 1770 is one of the most conflicting histories of the world. The reason for this is because so far people have come up with different accounts of what actually happened and the factors that culminated into the massacre. According to the Constitution Society’s version on constitution.org, the massacre was triggered when four youths encountered a soldier brandishing a sword and in an attempt to stop him from potentially causing harm to other people passing through the alley, sought to contain him. This, however, bore no fruit and what followed was other soldiers of the 29th Regiment coming from the camp at Murray's barrack to hunt down the boys and thus leading to bloodshed. The American History’s version includes an anonymous account of the Boston Massacre on let.rug.nl. It documents that a happy union and existence between Great Britain and the colonies were disrupted by the Stamp Act and further by commerce and political interests. It is these aspects which culminated into unrests and thus the Boston massacre. Captain Preston’s account on let.rug.nl on the Boston massacre also outlines that the arrival of the Majesty’s troops in Boston was a wrong move and became obnoxious to the inhabitants. Captain Preston basically responded to a call that people, the inhabitants were assembling to attack the troops. This actually came after the two soldiers who one of them was brandishing a sword was about to be contained. Matters went haywire in a few moments, hence leading to the Boston massacre.
I believe that the Boston Massacre was a riot which turned deadly as a result of a street brawl between American colonists and a British soldier. The brawl actually escalated in a matter of minutes and turned into a chaotic bloody slaughter. This is one riot which strengthened anti-British sentiments and led to the American Revolution. From the three accounts, I believe that the Boston Massacre was a result of a great misunderstanding between the two antagonizing groups and because of growing animosity, there was no much thought put into finding an amicable solution to the same in its early stages which would have prevented the conflict. My thinking about the massacre has so far changed and I believe that the massacre was not only about the street brawl but a deep animosity between the American colonists and British soldiers.
