The global food shortages have been rising at an alarming speed thus becoming a challenge not only to the developing nations but also to the developed ones. The world’s food crisis can jeopardize the lives of many people making them vulnerable and could delay the attainment of health-related goals. There is a direct interlink between hunger, poverty, and health of individuals and both are as a result of food shortages ( Ilaboya et al., 2012 ). Lack of food can reduce the ability of the body to defend against diseases and is one of the main risk factors for illnesses globally. Individuals living in extreme poverty are unable to produce or buy enough food thus leading to hunger and diseases.

One of the major causes of food shortages is natural disasters. Issues such as floods, drought, and locust infestation can reduce the ability of people to produce enough food thus causing hunger ( Ilaboya et al., 2012 ). Agricultural production requires the availability of rain and favorable climate or the presence of water bodies for irrigation. Without these, communities are unable to produce for themselves enough food. Insufficient food production mainly in the developing countries is as a result of the underdeveloped agricultural sector that is dominated by people over-relying on low fertility soils, primary agriculture and minimal use of external farm inputs that adds value to the soil. Most of these areas rely on rain for agriculture, and due to the currently changing weather conditions, they are more vulnerable to low food production.

Many communities, especially in the developing nations, lack basic modern agricultural skills that can be used to enhance food production even under harsh climatic conditions. This leads to most of these communities relying only on rains without which there will be a food shortage and hunger ( Ilaboya et al., 2012 ). Inadequate storage facilities can also lead to food wastes and hence shortages. Poor governance and policies can greatly affect food security. When the government cannot have good policies and plan to ensure that there is food security in the country, the resulting impact will be food shortages and subsequently hunger.
