Sonnet 124 is among the 154 written by Shakespeare representing a member of the fair youth as the poet express their love to a young man. The central idea in this sonnet is youth materialism, human state, and politics. It is different from the previous sonnets as the author transitions from his interpretation of love in which he previously referred to as Fair Youth. It demonstrates how the poet realized his short-sightedness and youth materialism. It is full of metaphorical extension as the poet periodically makes political reference.
The sovereign state is held high as the poet demonstrates its functions in the sovereign world. He realizes thow fragile the state is as it is also subjected to periods of love or hate as shown in the third line. During his time, political assassinations were commonplace throughout Europe. During that period, Queen Elizabeth was regarded as high in status, virtue, and intelligence but attempts were made for her life. Tactfully, the poet extends out from the state to envelop human conditions. In the fifth and sixth line, he shows the connection between state and its populace. The relationship between state and accidents demonstrate the instability of the political environment which translates back to human more so with no love.
