From the film, we see nurses who experience some of the major issues in the healthcare field. The movie explores the role played by five nurses in the nursing profession (Frank & Jones, 2014). The film is a revelation considering that it explores some of the challenges nurses go through behind the scenes. The nursing profession demands a lot and is not just about maintaining good health but also demands having empathy with the people. From the movie, the five nursing characters include Jason Short, Sister Stephen, Tonia Faust, McMillionnot and Naomi Cross. These five nurses are used to show aesthetic in nursing practice. From the movie, the scene where Jason sustains a motorcycle accident clearly depicts aesthetic. This follows as Jason never really knew what it felt to be truly cared for, after finding out what the experience is like, he sees the beauty of nursing and decides to join the practice. Jason reveals his life of delinquency in high school, moreover, he explains how sustaining a motorcycle accident changed his life; an experience he claims made him feel what true care feels like (Frank & Jones, 2014).

It is quite evident that nursing profession is both an art and science. Nursing entails more than just knowing but it involves doing. Nurses use art to pass information to their patients, it requires a special skill to do this considering that sometimes the news is not a good one, hence they must be soothing in a way and compassionate towards the patients. Nurses strive to maintain the art concept while caring plays the role of moral center. In nursing, care is provided as an art and as science. Nursing as science provides care through theoretical concepts and scientific research while care is provided as an art through conscious behaviours, which are showed through interaction with the patients. The two are similar in that despite being diverse, they are all aimed at providing care.
From the movie, I have witnessed caring values such as compassion, courage, commitment and competence. Tonia shows courage in her role, she must deal with patients who have committed serious offences against the public such as rape and murder (Frank & Jones, 2014). As a nurse, Tonia views these prisoners in a different way despite having committed these terrible offences. Tonia addresses some of the challenges faced by nurses in the current healthcare system. Nurses must not be judgmental in caring for patients in order to deliver quality services. In order for the patients to have complete trust in the care provided and feel reassured, it is essential that nurses build secure nurse-to-patient relationship. Nurses have a duty of administering care despite the background of the patient. From the movie, Tonia clearly leads by example.
On the other hand, Naomi who works at Johns Hopkins Hospital displays competence as a labor and delivery nurse. Despite Naomi expressing her frustrations about the job, she remains calm and collected during the procedures. Since she once experienced a miscarriage, she empathizes with patients. She acknowledges the importance of having a support system during such traumatizing times. I concur with Naomi’s thoughts on the fact that nurses must also remain healthy despite their demanding job since they can experience burnout.
Jason displays commitment and compassion in his role. Jason has to drive far to reach people who live in areas ambulances cannot reach, an example being his drive to Appalachia to see a home bound cancer patient. Despite the patient being financially strained, Jason still visits him and gives him hope. Modernly, medical procedures have proven too expensive for the ordinary people who are forced to shy away from medical services. Personally, before the Obama care I found it challenging to access medical care. It is essential that healthcare is made affordable for the ordinary people. This challenge makes people suffer from health challenges that can be easily treated.
At the center where Sister Stephen a nurse works is filled with goats, sheep’s, llamas, chickens, which she uses in therapy with the elderly residents. The elderly patients find hope from seeing those animals around them. She expresses the importance of understanding the needs of the patients despite the condition they battle (Frank & Jones, 2014). Her motivation was her father who had to take large doses for his condition, something he was not comfortable doing. It is understandable that there are times when patients may not want a certain medication despite being the best for them. The needs and preferences should be respected.
I discovered my calling in nursing when I was young. My brother fell sick and was taken to the hospital for treatment, the type of care administered to him made me fall in love with nursing. From the film I relate to Jason the most considering that he is committed to providing care despite the challenge of lacking money where he still provides care to people who need it most. The scene where Jason finds out what it truly feels like to be cared for makes me connected to nursing. The scene makes me want to change someone else’s life through providing quality care. From the movie, I noticed that all the five nurses had one thing in common, which is to provide quality care despite the situation.
From the film, knowledge is clearly showed by the nurses considering that they use their nursing knowledge to provide care to the patients. This is evident at the scene where Sister Stephen uses her therapy knowledge to incorporate animals like goats in therapy for the elderly. I think that spirituality in nursing is not that essential. This follows as people have different beliefs regarding religion and spirituality. Therefore, what the nurses may believe may not be similar to that of the patients hence it may present some problems when providing care. It is a fact that at workplace, diversity may be a blessing or a curse. From the movie, the nurses hail from diverse backgrounds hence each one of them has their spiritual beliefs despite not being clearly depicted in the film. Moreover, each nurse has his or her own motivation in the practice.
In conclusion, from the movie, the five nurse characters Tonia Faust, Jason Short, Naomi Cross, Sister Stephen and Brian McMillion clearly showed exemplary nursing skills. After watching the film, my nursing perspective widened. I realized that each of the five nurses, had a pool of experiences and challenges in the profession. Among the challenges they faced include; encouraging more healthy behaviors, reducing health care costs, applying knowledge in unfamiliar situations and providing more access and coverage. I got a great insight learning how the nurses solved their challenges and it made learn just how I should provide care to my patients in my future nursing endeavours. I learnt from the movie that I should not limit myself on being only a task oriented nurse but should be in a position to provide a caring patient-centered plan of care.
