Harpo has changed a lot within the six months that Sofia has been away. He has changed from the homeboy that he used to be to someone who is always on the road, traveling all over. When Miss Celie asks him about what is going on to make him not settle down even for a minute, he claims to be busy doing some things. Whatever he does not seem to be of help much. Harpo appears to have suffered a lot of psychological issues. He seems to have realized that he can use his handsomeness and smartness to make money. He, however, is scanty about revealing who taught him all these things.
Harpo seems to be entangled in an endless series of activities. Together with his friend Swain, they are always working so hard into the night running endless chains of errands. He seeks to build Jukejoint in the forest. He is of the opinion that at in the woods, there is little disturbance to the public with loud music and endless commotions that are borne out of such places. The police are also out of bounds in the forested areas. Therefore, people can engage in fist fights and to some extents killings.

Miss Celie asks Harpo what will happen when Sofia returns with her children. Harpo, however, seems to be convinced that she won’t be coming back. He, however, does not give any explanation for that, as he continues working when he is asked why he thinks so. After finishing his juke joint, he drinks alone behind the counters listening to Swain playing his music. As at now, he has not even a single customer. Harpo’s attempts to welcome Miss Celie in his joint hits a snag, same as Miss Shug who does not mince her words. She says what comes into her mind the way things are. She blatantly tells Harpo that nobody would go all the way into the forest to listen to Swain’s music; this statement does not sit well with Harpo.
However, the first Saturday night, many folks crowded Harpo ’s joint that there was no place to stand. Shug, not to be left behind, she joins the party. However, Celie seems held back, concerned that she may become sick while singing or her dress bay spoil in the process. However, Mr._ is adamant that his wife cannot and should not go to rave places. Shug replies that she is gladly not his wife as they make way to Harpo's joint. Mr._??? takes cold whiskey while Shug takes cold before she joins the merry and sings a song about Bessie Smith; her old friend. The song is called a Good Man is Hard to Find. Mr.??? Seems stuck on his chair and all he can do is watch as Shug sings.
Celie seems jealous of Shug. Mr. ??? Keeps staring at her black skin in her tight red dress. Celie on her part is suffocated in churchgoing clothes that makes her seem reserved. Later on, Shug sings Miss Celie a song that she sang to her when she was sick. Celie, while not looking at her sing only hums along with the tunes and the tones. She has humbled that for the first time someone made something unique and named it after her. Shug keeps going to Harpo’s joint almost every Saturday from that encounter. Harpo makes good money from Shug’s performances while she makes some as well. It is a mutual benefit to both of them.
Shug decides after some time that it is time to leave the place and go off into the world. This does not please Miss Celie at all. She seems sad that her Albert beats her every time that Celie is not around. Albert appears to like Celie that she beats Shug for not being like her. Celie decides to stay around Shug until she is confident that Albert won’t hit her. They spend the night together that night; especially now that she is leaving soon. She goes to sing at Harpo’s where he goes to see her perform late into the night before they go home to sleep. Soon Shug seems to want to get back with Albert only that Celie fears that she might get beaten again. Shug still loves Albert; he loves the bully part of him too. He makes her laugh, and that makes her happy being with him.
