Diamonds commodity involves using the practices that exploit workers and the community at large. The workers who help produce diamond earn less than a dollar a day. While the workers work extra hard to produce a large amount of diamond, what they are paid is far much less than the value of the work they do. Millions of diamond workers live in poverty as what they are paid is far much less and unable to sustain their economic lives. This happens at the time when the owners earn huge sums of money from the sales. The labor standards and the minimum wage laws are sometimes not enforced in this sector thus subjecting the workers to exploitation and cruel working condition ( Schlosser, 2013 ). This has raised an ethical problem with many calling for the intervention to help the diamonds workers fight for their rights to get fair pay that reflects the value of the work they do.

Because children are usually seen as a source of cheap labor, they are mainly used to help in the production of diamond. In some areas, it has been found that close to 40% of the workers are children between the ages of 8 and 16 ( Schlosser, 2013 ). These children worked for long hours under hard conditions and paid very little money. They are also denied the chance to go to school as they spend most of their time at the workplace. Child labor is one of the activities that has been considered not only illegal but also unethical in the communities around the world. Exploiting children for an economic benefit and denying them the opportunity to get the education is an unethical form of business. Human rights have been voicing their concerns over the use of children in the diamonds produce, a move that they consider an unethical business practice which should not be tolerated in the 21st century.
