After reading the lesson this week, compose a paragraph of 'reader response' to the Dickinson poem and one of the Whitman poems
In Dickinson’s poem, I'm Nobody! Who Are You? There is a constant use of fancy punctuation throughout the poem which for me makes the poem unique and memorable. There is also sarcasm employed in the poem when the persona asks the question “Who are you? Are you nobody too?” and if this was the case, she cautions the recipient not to tell. The poem follows a rhyme scheme pattern of AABC which enhances musicality while reading it.

To my understanding, Whitman in his poem Song of Myself compliments himself at the beginning of the poem. The poet most importantly enjoys his surroundings and compliments the sights around him and seems to be very proud of his heritage.

The internet resource I used is a website which was helpful in my understanding of the symbolism employed by Emily Dickson in her poem, I'm Nobody! Who Are You? She implies in her poem that to be a nobody is a luxury that is incomprehensible to the Somebodies who are busy seeking recognition like croaking frogs in a swamp (Comparison of Dickenson and Whitman poems, 2017). This website was also helpful in showing me how the poet used juxtaposition in the poem. There is juxtaposition in the line where Emily writes “How public like a Frog" which conveys how frogs have public-like images as they tend to remind others of their identities in the swamp (Comparison of Dickenson and Whitman poems, 2017).
What lines from "Song of Myself" describe, in your view, something important or unique about American identity?
I celebrate myself and sing myself
My tongue, every atom of my blood, formed from this soil, this air, Born here of parents born here from parents the same, and their parents the same,
These lines describe the unique American identity of their sense of pride. There is a deep sense of pride emanating from these lines which is unique to the American culture. For instance, the first line is a tribute to oneself which is a compliment. The line talking about being born here illustrates the natural delight for the environment and the land in which one was born into which is evident in the American culture.
