Main Idea

The main idea in the first law of Newton is the notion of force. Newton postulates that force can alter the direction or velocity of an object. The law is based on the fact that an object’s velocity remains constant until forces that are not balanced act upon the object. Objects are affected by force, whether they are at rest or in motion.

Summary

In his work, Newton introduces the concept of force. He expands on Galileo's work about inertia incorporating the concept of force, which alters objects' position. Newton's first law suggests that an object's velocity remains constant until when forces that are not balanced act upon it. That also applies to objects at rest. Meaning that just like those in motion, objects also remain at rest unless unbalanced forces act upon them. Objects in motion keep moving, and those at rest remain at rest unless a force that is not balanced acts on them. The force can accelerate, slow, or stop an object. Force is the main

Extrapolation

According to Newton’s first law, a car moving at a velocity of 55 miles per hour should continue moving at the same velocity when the driver removes his foot on the accelerator, as long as the forces around the car remain balanced. Nevertheless, the car starts to slow its speed, and it eventually stops because the forces surrounding the car are not balanced. In this case, the external unbalanced force surrounding the car is friction. Friction opposes the car's motion, slowing it down and finally, bringing it to a stop.

New Words

Gravitation: tendency to move towards the center of gravity

Inertia : the tendency of matter to keep moving or remain at rest until a force is exerted on it.

Velocity : the speed of a moving object towards a given direction

Friction : a force that opposes the motion of an object moving on a surface.

Gravity : a force that attracts objects to the center of the earth.

Acceleration: the rate at which an object changes its velocity.

Intuitive: an idea based on feeling rather than reason

Infer : make a conclusion based on evidence.
