Freedom is one of the human’s basic needs, which play a crucial role in the social process. Human choices expand as one develops, which is a necessity in their freedom. Individuals improve their welfare through development, in which freedom is also an important aspect in achieving it.
In “ Anthem,” by Ayn Rand, the concept of freedom is well elaborated. The narrator in the story explains how the word, "I" should be highly ranked in the freedom concept. The author explains that the word "we" is a source of all evils in the world (Rand, 2008, p.37). Additionally, by thinking collectively, as dictated by the term "we," one is incapable of discovering all their potential.

Rand narrates about a group, Equality 7-2521, that is lowly ranked but makes discoveries in society, which is against the norm. This particular society encourages that all people act for the sake of their brothers. Additionally, people are assigned specific roles in society, which they should adhere to. For instance, Equality 7-2521 is a group, which is assigned the role of sweeping the city. However, the Equality 7-2521 group engages in research, in which they discover electricity, which they think would impact lives positively. However, their discovery is not welcomed because of their low rank, which is also against their societal norms.
Rand uses group Equality 7-2521 to illustrate the concept of freedom, whereby its basis is the word "I.” Rand explains that the term "we" is corrupted, with many people in leadership positions using it to humiliate and deprive others of their freedom. He also explains that through freedom there is wisdom as one can explore new things. Additionally, through freedom, an individual can choose what to believe, follow, and think (Jafarzadeh & Beheshtu, 2011). Rand explains that in the word "we," there is falsehood, misery, and shame. I agree with Rand on the concept of "we" and how other people use it to deprive others of their freedom and growth. Additionally, through the word, "we" people lack equality which necessary in society.
