One thing of concern is the current age limit on alcohol consumption. There have been questions on whether the current drinking age is safe enough, or whether it needs to be adjusted so that youths get to grow up in a society where alcohol is not encouraged as a way of inducing sobriety in society. This paper postulates that the current drinking age is too low, and it might be encouraging youths to drink at a very young age and thus encouraging the addictions to alcohol in society.

Alcohol does more harm than good to society, and the effects are even worse in young people. Young people are vulnerable to the effects of heavy drinking which narrows their possibility of having a health sober future. The current age limit in the U.S. is at twenty one, which is too low and should be raised to not lower than twenty-six. At 21, an individual is too young to make critical decisions and thus youths at this age cannot be said to be responsible enough to drink. Additionally, early addictions to alcohol often lead to addictions that last a lifetime due to the effects on the individuals growing body systems.

Indeed, before the age of 25, people lack physical maturity, their brain and nervous systems are still developing and drugs and alcohol have a negative impact on their body before this age. A lot of youths between 21 years of age and 25 years are legally consuming alcohol and exposed to the negative impacts. Research shows incidences of brain damage in young people between 18 and 25 who consumed alcohol. Raising the age limit to 26 or above will protect the youth from the harmful effects of alcohol before full maturity. In this paper, I will discuss why I believe the age limit on alcohol consumption should be raised and provide support evidence based on facts and research.
