Even though it was about a class that I was not excited in doing and lacked interest in the topic, I found out that clinical research is overwhelming and I thank my nursing tutor because she finally made me have the ability to select a clinical topic and investigate. However, I have to accept that the current practice to formulate a researchable clinical topic is still challenging since this requires a committed investigation about the topic before it is chosen. Nonetheless, selecting a clinical topic upon being forced to evaluate current clinical practices and investigating the effectiveness of the practice could absolutely be challenging. Therefore, the current practice to formulate a researchable clinical topic/question is indeed difficult; however, it is apparent that a successful nursing research relies on how excellent a researcher formulates a research topic/question which must also be based on the clinical issues encountered in the day-to-day clinical activities and research activities (Aslam and Emmanuel, 2010). In fact, having an underlying question in a clinical study gives the researcher a fundamental direction to identify whether the topic is significant, relevant, or researchable. In summary, a well-formulated clinical research topic/question, therefore, requires excellent preciseness, a high degree of accuracy and extreme specificity to guide the implementation of the study bearing in mind the identification of research population’s interest and research variables.

Clinical research as the basis for clinical decision-making to improve outcomes

With the introduction of modern technology, which has improved the accuracy of clinical research outcomes, nursing studies have continually generated enormous amounts of findings to help make serious clinical decisions. For example, the clinical findings produced from various clinical studies have helped physicians to revise methods of treatment and care aiming at improving patients’ welfare and the general clinical interventions outcomes (Aslam, 2010). Moreover, clinical research findings can practically help to improve patients’ quality of life and save their lives when used to make clinical decisions and implemented in clinical practices. The additional clinical research methods such as experimental, observational, and survey studies will apparently provide nurses with more insights about nursing decision-making and evidence-based nursing knowledge.

The importance of clinical research proposal to address nursing problems

A clinical research proposal is very important because it provides the researcher with an opportunity to impress the research stakeholders and interested scholars that the study the researcher is proposing will be of interest and of importance from a clinical perspective/viewpoint, for example, the proposal will illustrate to these professionals that the research is capable of providing new knowledge and insights into a particular clinical area (Khodabux, 2015). Therefore, the quality of a clinical research proposal depends on both the formulation of clear clinical research topic/questions and explicit problem statements that are based on encyclopedic literature reviews. Moreover, a good clinical research proposal must also be able to fit between the research paradigm, research methods, and research problem. Finally, the proposal must provide clear conceptual definitions of concepts to be investigated and explicitly describe the theoretical framework that will inform and guide the main clinical research since these are important in assuring transferability and transparency of the entire study.

The ethical considerations in clinical research (consent, data management, data analysis, and protection of human subjects)

During clinical research, several ethical considerations usually come up and must be properly addressed to ensure an accurate research outcome (Stevens, 2013). One of the main ethical considerations in clinical research is consent. The researcher is expected to seek consent from all research participants before the actual study to help ensure that only interested and willing participants take part in the study. Secondly, protection of human subjects and confidentiality is another important ethical concern in clinical research, and the researcher must ensure that he/she keep all collected data confidential unless the information is leaked within the consent of the participant (Stevens, 2013). Confidentiality will also guide data analysis and data management and will ensure that only the right professionals analyze and manage confidential patients’ data and avoid publishing them.

The national and international initiatives and research priorities

The current important national and international clinical initiative is national or International Nurse. The International Nurse moves or travels from one part of the earth to the other and sometimes travel across the world in order to provide clinical care to patients situated in another country or to provide clinical skills to areas where they are most needed (Stevens, 2013). On the other hand, the current clinical research priorities include networking opportunities, professional development, nursing research grants, public policy initiatives, and testing services, and that is the reason why the National League for Nursing (NLN) was formed to act on these nursing research priorities.
