Having a single story about a person, a culture or a nation implies having a single perception about that person, a nation or a culture. Having a single story further implies knowing one side of a person, a culture or a nation and basing your judgment about that particular culture, person or nation on the side of the story you know. It is not recommendable to have a single story about someone as this may lead to poor judgment. For instance, most white Americans have a single story about the African Americans. African Americans are known for the wrong reasons in the country. As a result, a good percentage of the people facing mass incarceration in the country are African Americans. The situation has become intimidating that most African Americans faces different forms of harassment due to the single story most people have about them. The negative judgment the Black Americans faces is as a result of the single story. A single story may further perpetuate injustices, and bias during social interaction.
Abortion is an ethical issue that forms a topic of discussion in the healthcare field. The society perceives abortion as a sinful act. As a result, the fight against abortion is a significant priority. Most young girls who prefer abortion than keeping their unborn babies receive cruel treatment from the society without considering different reasons that push them into committing this unethical act. As a result, I have a single story about these ladies, and I view them as outcasts and murderers. I am fortunate that I was brought up in a well to do family. In most occasions, my friends think that since my family is wealthy, I do not have challenges. This is a single story they have about me, and often, they judge my decisions and actions on such side of my story.
