Race refers to a group of people that share common physical characteristics such as the color of their skin or the structure of their face (Nagel, 2003). Scientific findings assert that unlike ethnic characteristics, racial characteristics are often biological in that they can be passed on from one generation to another. Most sociologists and historians however believe that there are no distinguishing physical characteristics or genetic features that can comprehensively differentiate one person from another. Instead, they argue that different groups of people share overlying characteristics. However, in all the findings, there are groups of people sharing certain characteristics ("RACE - The Power Of An Illusion. Human Diversity | PBS"). Therefore, to me race refers to part of one’s identity. It is the character attributes associated with an individual or features that an individual identifies with and they are proud about.

In my own opinion, there are three races in the world that can easily be identified physically but there could be more. Following the different definitions of race, there could be more races in uncategorized segments but following the physical distinction that exists between different people, I think the three main ones are blacks, white and Caucasian.

My ideas about race come from different sources. First the contemporary scholars who have documented different views about race trigger me to think about it, the idea of race has become very common in the world today and it is all over the media, I meet with people who discuss about it in school and I have watched different videos about race. All these sources have contributed to my idea of what race.

After taking a diversity test, I have learnt that people are very different. When we look at people, we identify their physical difference but people are so much more different behind what meets the eye. Finally, from the daring eye color lesson in discrimination, I learn that discrimination is an illusion in that people discriminate against each other based on fear. Those on the giving end are afraid of what the others may achieve if they utilized their full potential thus they feel the need to attack them. People discriminate others only because they are different or because they somehow appear vulnerable ("A Class Divided"). Therefore, to avoid discrimination, people should face their fears head on in order to understand unity. This approach could be used in schools today since most children understand better through experimental learning that through programs.
