“To fight deadly Candida Auris” is an article published on May 23, 2019 in the New York Times magazine. The article explains the proposed techniques by the New York state in the prevention of the spread of Candida Auris. Health officials in New York proposed new guidelines for health care facilities to prevent Candida Auris from spreading. The guidelines include screening at risk patients before admitting them into the hospital. The requirements also include putting infected patients in isolation to prevent the spread of the fungus.

Although screening might be expensive and take more time, state officials proposed that the fungus would be prevented from spreading at all costs. Candida Auris is very dangerous and the fact that is spreads easily and quickly makes it a burden on health care system. It is difficult to get rid of the fungus from equipment or clothes. In addition, it also spreads through air. According to Brad Hutton, New York State’s commissioner of public health, the main objective is to halt the spread in the area.

Screening patients suspected to be at risk of Candida Auris and isolating the infected ones prevents the spread of the fungus from the infected to the uninfected. This is primary prevention because the proposed guidelines are to prevent transmission and onset of the infection. From another perspective, it can be considered as secondary prevention because screening before admission leads to early diagnosis which to early treatment before the infection becomes severe.

I think screening patients for Candida Auris before admission and isolating the infected ones can be an effective measure in preventing the spread of the fungus. Considering the fact that it is difficult to treat because of its resistance to drugs, prevention at the primary and secondary level would be the best solution. Although expensive, prevention costs are lower than treatment expenses.
