Mathew Desmond narrates the stories of the impoverished families in the neighborhoods of Milwaukee. Most of their earnings went to rent and were routinely evicted owing the inequality deepened in the country. The book gives us a great understanding of extreme economic exploitation and poverty as well as bringing solutions to the unique American problem. Approximately one in five poor families who are renting fail to pay utility bills and are threatened with disconnection notices. Landlords evict the tenants for failing to pay their rent and other violation. The rate of unemployment rate doubled and black poverty rate rose by 14% in the 1980s in Milwaukee. The city has a long history of racism. Three in four families who are eligible for rental aid are given nothing. The problem should be addressed by supporting people with disabilities, older adults, including ones earning significant wages among the low-income families. Reducing support for poor and the single-mother families will not impact their chance of improvement. Factors such as illiteracy and low level of education, mental or physical issues, substance use, criminal records, and domestic violence are barrier hindering them to work. Public policy recommendations should support families who are neither disabled nor aged, but are living down the earnings distribution in a consistent way along the American values. The failure to support these families is based on the assumption that the poor have failed to take responsibility for their situation. A lot has to done for people who are unable to work, whether by providing training programs, better childcare for mothers who work, or other similar aid. And despite that their wages cannot rise to a level of their desire, new methods of aiding such families who exert effort but with little success should be developed to provide short-term and medium term assistance.
