At the center of Western expansionism was the rising level of technologies as well as Christianity both in European nations and the rest of the world. The difference between the technology levels in some of the continents of the world and that in Europe was not that much during the early part of the eighteenth century. However, in the nineteenth century the technological advances in Europe became massive, and as a result, they gained superiority over other continents. During this time, the gap between the technologically developed countries and those who had not advanced technologically grew bigger despite the diffusion of the idea of technology by the colonial powers. This technological superiority in the West enabled them to impose their will on the larger population who were less advantaged technologically.
Advances in infrastructure and especially railroads became an important tool for consolidating Western rule over the other territories. With this power, therefore, they were able to massively extend their empires resulting in the spirit of inferiority amongst the colonized while the colonizers became more of racists and arrogant. The commanding position of the Western powers provided for them to probe other markets in Africa and Asia and try to break the monopoly of Asian traders in South America. This is a period which saw the British world interest broaden to cover the Far East, South Pacific, the South Atlantic and the coast of Africa.

Another notable reason for the expansion of the Western empires was the expansion of Christianity brought about by the colonialists. Their clear knowledge of religion made them dominate the other territories which were the colonizers. Due to this supremacy, they imposed their will on other continents which did not have a clear knowledge of Christianity as a religion. Due to this reason, the European continent expanded their territories mostly to the coast of Africa.
