What happened to the Ottoman Empire in the late 1800s? 

There was a war between the Ottoman Empire and the Allied nations involving the British, French and Greek. The Ottomans were greatly defeated in the war and an armistice was formed between the nations at war. The Allied nations chose to retain the Sultan, recognizing that he was a figurehead; thus, his retention would ensure post-war stability.

It was fair for one person to have complete control. That helped a lot in final decision-making activities. It nullifies varying differences and would minimize the amount of time debating on what would be best for whom. However, it is only suitable to rule over such a diverse population by assigning different departments to deal with different issues, just as Suleiman the Magnificent had done 

Why were some of the subjects (people being ruled) of the Ottoman Empire unhappy? 

The Ottoman Empire consisted of various diverse groups of individuals. Therefore, it was challenging to satisfy all these people's needs equally, which resulted in a lot of disagreements and the empire's slow collapse.

The Ottoman Empire was defeated and conquered by the powerful British Empire and its massive navy. The Ottomans surrendered the remainder of their land when they signed the Treaty of Versailles in 1918, which officially broke their empire.
