The United States Constitution states that all humans have equal rights, and their protection was fundamental in the establishment of the country years ago. There has been significant progress, particularly of the LGBTQ rights which took place in the late 20th century. Although the country is considered the most tolerant in the world courtesy of the Equality Act that outlawed discrimination based on sexual orientation, 100% acceptance is yet to be achieved (Cain, 2018). The government is supportive of gay rights through several landmark rulings by the Supreme Court such as Defense of the Marriage Act and nationwide struck down of sodomy laws.
Being gay is natural and not a choice. The statement may be contradictory, especially to religious individuals. In as much as the research surrounding gay people is vague, there are no verified cases that formerly gay people transform and lead straight lives. A sexual orientation researcher at Cornell University named Gerulf Rieger attributes genes as one of the leading factors that predetermine someone's orientation (Savin-Williams, Cash, McCormack, & Rieger, 2017). That particular factor cannot be altered, which is why many of those who try therapy end up being frustrated and emotionally scarred. For this reason, efforts should be directed in reducing discrimination, hostility, and misunderstanding but not sexual orientation.

The Bible tells us we are equal, created in God's image and likeness. However, religious leaders and devoted Christians tend to overlook that part and only pay attention to the verse that condemns homosexuality (Hunt, 2016). The double standards come in handy when they are condemning the laws that allow gay people to coexist with their fellow Americans. The constitutional amendments that put the law above religious beliefs help in maintaining respect and dignity towards homosexuals. This is because a sole focus on the moral wrongs alone opens up the vulnerability of the minority community.
Some people believe that born this way is not a thing and that being gay is an absolute choice. The notion, however, is untrue as years of research shows that people cannot change their sexual orientation (Norton, 2016). Those who run to religion, science, or therapy end up frustrated because various researches suggest a genetic and biological basis of being gay (Norton, 2016). If the myth were true and homosexuality was a matter of choice, then people would switch back and forth at their pleasure. Treatment is harmful to the individuals who attempt and worsens the feelings of hatred, which may lead to suicide.
