The findings from “One Man’s Trash” show that the waste materials that are collected from various households consist of food, paper, and plastic elements. The data presented indicate that the highest amount of waste consists of food elements such as groceries. The percentage of food waste remains constantly high ranging from 50% to 80%. The percentage of plastic and paper wastes, on the other hand, is relatively low with paper waste slightly higher than plastic waste.

There are some strategies that I can implement to make waste more sustainable. Firstly, I can reduce food wastage by buying and preparing groceries that are enough for consumption without excesses. This way, I will be in a position to reduce the high levels of food waste as indicated by the findings. Secondly, I can reuse paper and plastic products rather than disposing of them. For instance, plastic bottles can be used to store other household items such as detergents.

To make waste more sustainable, the community can implement recycling programs that recycle paint cans, aerosol containers and plastics bags (Sustainable waste, 2012). It is also important for the community to adhere to waste management hierarchy which involves prevention, minimization, reuse, recycling, energy recovery and disposal (Sustainable waste management strategy, 2012). For instance, community members ought to be encouraged to recycle and reuse various products to reduce the amount of waste in their households (Managing and reducing wastes: A guide for commercial buildings, 2017).

There is need to raise awareness about waste management. This can be achieved through mass forums that educate people about reducing, reusing and recycling waste material. The advantages of reducing waste such as environmental preservation should be emphasized. This approach is likely to yield better outcomes compared to the mere act of telling people to reduce waste without a thorough explanation.
