Impacts of Automation of Forensic Instrumentations

Automation of forensic instrumentation will have numerous impacts on crime scene analysis. Before the integration of these technologies, crime scene investigations were conducted by humans who could work in the investigations laboratories and come up with the results pertaining to the crime at hand. Evidence processing is an activity that requires limited time for raising the conclusions. In most cases, when evidence takes long to be processed, the involved parties tend to lower their trust in the investigation bodies. In addition, the longer the investigation takes place, it gives high chances of manipulating the evidence (Leclair & Scholl, 2005).

Automation of forensic instrumentation will help in faster processing of evidence, unlike the current laboratory systems that take longer to analyze the evidence (Mennel & Shaw, 2006). As identified above, when evidence takes long processing time, parties tend to lower their trust, give up and even there are chances of manipulating the evidence that may lead to unlawful judgments. Through the automation of forensic instrumentation, the justice process will be improved hence preventing or reducing crime.

Additionally, there will be an increase in sample traceability (Leclair & Scholl, 2005). Automated forensic instrumentations provide increased sample throughput hence decrease the amount of labor required for such cases. The current crime investigation systems employ human to operate the laboratories. In most cases, human beings are subject to errors. If such cases happen, the evidence might be manipulated or even misinterpreted. However, the automation of forensic instrumentation will help in avoiding such errors in the future. In addition, manual testing methods currently used risks user variability that may require reworking previous evidence samples.

There will be increased efficiency in the crime scene investigation process (Mennel & Shaw, 2006). The current laboratory workflow process is moderate following human involvement in different investigative processes carried out in the laboratory. The level of efficiency is at an average in consideration of the human error aspect. However, automatic forensic instruments will maximize efficiency throughput the investigations process and improve the laboratory workflow process as well.

Moreover, there will be an increase in productivity and standardization. For instance, each analyst in the DNA laboratories processes an approximate amount of 500 samples (Leclair & Scholl, 2005). However, through automation of forensic instruments, there will be a gradual increase in the future increasing the number of processed samples. Through the forensic instruments, there will be a standardized time duration that will be allocated for each process. In return, this will extend the time for more sample analysis and improve efficiency in the workflow. Therefore, automation of forensic instrumentation will greatly improve the crime scene investigations process.
