Transportation is a market composed of suppliers of transport services and users of the services. A well-functioning transport system involves having adequate supply to meet the transport demand and satisfying of the transportation needs for mobility. Transport supply involves the provision of transportation infrastructure and modes in a geographic region over a period of time (Schwedes & Hoor, 2019). Transport demand involves transport needs whether they are fully, partially, or not met. The demand function varies depending on what is being transported as it can involve passengers, freight, and information.

For the three given modes, the criteria and attributes of the functions that could cause transportation to vary include the volume, the distance, time of the year, and customer preferences. The volume could involve the number of people being transported, the number of goods, and the amount of information being transported (Colicchia et al., 2017). For instance, when transporting items purchased from Amazon. The company offers same day shipping and it puts a massive volume of packages through the supply chain. The costs will vary on the number of goods being transported and the time of delivery.

The demand can also vary based on the distance being transported. The movement of passengers can depend on the location, whether it is residential, industrial, or commercial areas. Geographical considerations are also involved in the type of transport. For instance, flights are usually a consideration when traveling over a long distance. Freight transport demand between different countries also vary based on the goods being transported.

The time of the year and customer preferences can also impact the supply and demand. During the holiday season, many people travel and this causes the transportation demand to go up. When the demand exceeds the supply, there can be increase in prices like that of an increase in the cost of flights. Customer preferences may also affect the goods being transported. Some people may prefer to travel using flight while others may prefer using road.
