The world has experienced wars, for example, world war one and one world war two, there is a lot of religious discrimination, and there are boundaries that separate countries. The following reasons illustrate how the "Imagine" song is connected to themes and events in the world history:
Religion and value systems are a theme in the world history that is connected with Lennon’s song Imagine. Religion and value systems have created differences and bitterness among different religions. Each religion feels that they religion is superior to the rest. They look down upon the other religions, and at times they forcefully attempt to convert them to their religion. There are people who have become extremists in their religion and have often caused death or inflicted both emotional and physical to the people who oppose their religion. These extremists behavior has often caused war among nations and nations, people and nations, groups and nations 1 .The result of these conflict created is usually death and severe damages. In Lennon’s first stanza of the “Imagine” song, he wants the listener to imagine that neither heaven nor hell exists; all that is above the listener is the sky. Through these lines, the listener gets to understand that there is no need to fight over religion. Global interaction through wars, conquest, trade, and migration is one of the major themes and events in world history. This theme has enabled all the people living in the world to interact with each other. Global interaction has led to some positive outcomes while other activities such as war have led to death and destruction of property and environment. The world needs to be deprived of the boundaries that have created barriers and limited the space and ways of interaction. The "Imagine" song talks of imagining where there are no countries. Countries only exist as a result of boundaries created by the systems of governance. They can either be physical or imaginary.
Political and social systems as a theme of world history offer a great platform where Lennon's song "Imagine" gets connected. Politics has led to countries having kings and queens, dictators and president, elected congress and the society is governed in general. Countries have often gotten into conflict as a result of political reasons. World leaders fight over boundaries and resources. They invent sophisticated weapons that cause mass destruction just to win a war that is triggered by political issues. The battles are fought for selfish gains by the political leaders. During world war one and world war two, soldiers were used by the political class to fight for wars that they didn’t even know the reason they were fighting. Through “Imagine” song, the listeners get encouraged not get involved in the war in the second and last stanza of the song. He tells them to imagine that there is no country and also to believe that there are no possessions. People imagine that there is no country and no possession get discouraged from fighting for a nation and over possessions. The young who are wishing to join the fighting receives discouraged through these lyrics.
The song "Imagine" is connected to Geography and History as a theme of world history. Geography and History influence peoples profession, how they dress, there eating habit and how they travel. Geography and History, therefore, determine how people interact with others. It creates physical boundaries, cultural boundaries. Language barriers also limit how people interact. Geography and History have made other humans feel more superior than others. It has made other to be termed as backward and archaic while others be termed modern and informed. The “Imagine” song tells its listeners to imagine that there were no boundaries created between the countries 2 . He wants all the human races to live in harmony and never look down upon any race.
There are regular continuity and change in the world history. All the societies in the world are experiencing a change in something. Some changes are seen while others take even centuries to be realized. The changes are realized in all dimensions of life. Lennon in his song "Imagine" wants the people to imagine that they are living in the world where these constant and continuity in change is not realized. The constant and continued change experienced by the societies globally is worrying trend to all societies. The changes in the world and the technological advancement and invention of more sophisticated weapons are the major contributors to such worries. “Imagine” tries to comfort those who are worried, he tells them to imagine that there is neither heaven nor hell. Through these words, the worried listeners become comforting. Some individuals who may be affected by depression and stress become rejuvenated.
Diversity is equally important in the themes and events of the world history. The theme of diversity in the world history is one of the sensitive themes to talk. This theme is supported with the hundreds of thousands of languages being spoken in the world currently. Great diversity seen in the world has led to numerous conflicts that have been experienced in the world history. The high diversity of people has led conflict of interest has each community of people are fighting for their space and survival. Some individuals of these communities have always perceived that their culture is more superior to the rest and at times have often tried to outdo the cultures of other communities. This conflict of interest has often led to the death of many people in the world as each community decides to fight for its space. The song “Imagine’ by Lennon, through its lyrics encourages the listeners to withstand each other’s culture. In the second stanza of the song, the listeners are made to imagine of people coexisting peacefully with each other 3 . Through this imagination created by Lennon people get to understand that despite the difference in culture and way of living, each person should withstand another’s culture.
In conclusion, “Imagine” song by Lennon, is connected with the themes and events of the world history. The major recorded and themes of the word history are mainly wars. The wars are always as a result of fighting over things like religion superiority, boundaries and finally possessions. When all people imagine of existing without all these that create conflicts, then humans will coexist peacefully.
