The Institute of Medicine (IOM) while collaborating with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation focused on working towards the establishment of key initiatives to address issues surrounding the Future of Nursing. The cornerstone of this program would be based on the conduction of major research whose objective would involve the preparation and compilation of a transformational report regarding the future of nursing ( Schroeder, 2016). The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health was based on a thorough evaluation and analysis of ways in which nurses' education, responsibilities, and roles would be expected to change in meeting the expectations of a diverse and aging population as well as a more dynamic system of healthcare. Some of the recommendations contained in this report are crucial for consideration in the process and efforts made towards advancing healthcare. 

In that respect, the focus of the recommendation made involved a critical consideration between the needs of the patients across their lifespan and the preparedness of the nursing workforce. Besides, the focus includes the intention to enhance the efforts in bettering the provision of healthcare services to members of the public in America. In improving the future of nursing, the work of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative on the Future of Nursing and the Institute of Medicine research that led to the IOM report was keen on the identification of the crucial roles played by nurses. Such roles include the formulation and implementation of a more efficient and effective system of healthcare ( Bleich, 2017).

Concerning nursing practice, nursing education and nursing workforce development, the importance of the IOM "Future of Nursing" were considerable. In that regard, the importance of the report included the provision of a framework that assisted nurses in the reconceptualization of their roles in the context of present societal issues, entire healthcare workforce, as well as present and future technological issues (Schroeder, 2016). Further, the findings and recommendations of this report helped in the creation of avenues for the redesigning of the nursing system of education, expansion of the nursing faculty, and raising the capacity of the schools offering training on nursing. The report was also important in the sense that it played a significant role in the creation of the basis for the examination of innovative initiatives associated with the delivery of healthcare services and health professional training. 

Besides, the findings of this report formed part of important considerations in the attraction and retention of well-trained nurses in healthcare settings with the inclusion of primary care, ambulatory, long-term, acute, public, and community health services. Other than the transformation of healthcare service provision and advancement of the nursing profession, the work of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative on the Future of Nursing was more concerned with addressing the existing challenges (Bleich, 2017). The outcomes of this report would be used in the development of policy framework that that would effectively counter the effects of healthcare challenges stemming from the complexity of the system and diversity of the population. 

State-based action coalitions play a considerable role in the provision of guidance for the identification and implementation of the recommendations and requirements of the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) landmark report and Future of Nursing: Leading Change as well as Advancing Health. In the advancement of the goals and objectives associated with campaigning for actions in the future of nursing, state-based action coalitions serve to provide awareness and enlightenment regarding some of the changes that are necessary for implementation in the system of healthcare delivery and the nursing profession. Further, the of state-based action coalitions facilitate the campaign for action in the future of nursing by offering guidance and direction for nurse-led solutions as well as to policymakers in various levels of government (Schroeder, 2016). Essentially, state-based action coalitions are involved in campaigning and playing advocacy roles within the community through educators, businesses, and health organizations representatives, among others. 

Two of the initiatives spearheaded by New York State's action coalition include improving the quality of healthcare delivery and lowering the cost associated with healthcare. These initiatives are essential in the advancement of the nursing profession in the sense that they aid in the elimination of some of the barriers against the scope-of-practice for nurses and other healthcare practitioners. Further, the initiatives will lead to the creation of an increase in the number of nurses and other healthcare service providers with a baccalaureate level of qualification ( Kershaw, 2018). Following the implementation of these initiatives, there is a higher likelihood of an increase in the diversity of nursing professionals to create a workforce that is well-equipped to address the expectations of diverse populations. Moreover, according to Kershaw (2018), the two initiatives ensure that nurses are provided with opportunities to have a better understanding of the importance of working together and strategizing about ways of improving healthcare service delivery. There is also the coordination of nursing of the nursing associations to ensure that all members of the public in the United States have accessibility to high-quality and affordable healthcare. 

In New York State, some of the barriers to the advancement of the nursing profession include personal barriers, workplace barriers, and policy barriers. Under the personal barriers, the advancement of the nursing profession is hindered by circumstances such as lack of the opportunities to enroll for further studies owing to family commitments, among other reasons. Nurses may also find themselves in situations where they lack the personal motivation to advance their studies by attending more seminars and training sessions. Under the workplace barriers, the advancement of the nursing profession for this particular state is mainly hindered by unbearable workload, lack of appropriate support from employers, and unfavorable terms of employment as well as poor conditions of working in some healthcare organizations and facilities (Bleich, 2017). Policy barriers in the advancement of nursing barriers entail failure in the formulation of policy measures that focus on creating opportunities for professional improvement. 

To overcome these barriers, the nursing advocates in the state of New York Should advocates for significant changes in the system of the nursing education with more emphasis being placed on meeting the ever-growing demand for healthcare services among the members of the public. There is also needed for advocacies that target the formulation and implementation of policies motivated by health care reform and advancement of the nursing profession to address America's dynamic and increasingly complex system of healthcare (Schroeder, 2016). Further, the nursing advocates should work on ensuring that nurses and other healthcare professionals are allowed to assume leadership and management roles and responsibilities in healthcare institutions and organization as a way of redesigning healthcare in the United States. 

Such an initiative will not just help in the elimination of barriers to the advancement of nursing but ensure that members of the nursing profession are well-prepared and adequately empowered. It would also be critical to consider the elimination of the identified barriers through increasing the number of residency training institutions for nurses as well as widening their scope of coverage (Kershaw, 2018). There will also be a need for the advocacy groups to campaign and champion for the improvement of terms of employment and working conditions for nurses to boost their morale and ensure that they are motivated to go for further studies and training in their various areas of specialization.
