Photosynthesis is essential to every organism in the ecosystem as plants use it in providing energy and nutrients to other organisms. Plants also balance the temperatures of the planet using the process. This paper discusses the importance of photosynthesis in understanding life on earth.

Importance of Photosynthesis in understanding life on earth

Photosynthesis is basically the process whereby plants generate and discharge oxygen into the atmosphere. Photosynthesis is carried out by plants to help generate food by use water, carbon dioxide as well as direct sunlight. During the process, plants decompose both carbon dioxide and hydrogen molecules to form carbon molecules, oxygen, and hydrogen. These elopements are responsible for the formation of glucose, which is later used as the source of food, energy, and growth. With oxygen as one of the by-products of photosynthesis and carbon dioxide as one of the requirements, photosynthesis directly relates to respiration which in turn uses oxygen during inhalation and produces carbon dioxide during exhalation (Möhring & Rendall, 2017)

The process of photosynthesis largely affects the carbon-dioxide levels in the atmosphere which depends on the number of trees and plants. Excessive decrease or increase in the levels of carbon dioxide can largely lead to disastrous effects on the life on earth (Stone, 2018). In the first place, industrial revolutions have increased the number of buildings, roads, factories, and production houses which use fuel and release carbon dioxide. These high levels of carbon dioxide can be harmful to the environment and it may lead to the increase of temperatures on earth. On the contrary, a similar decrease in carbon dioxide levels may make the earth to freeze since carbon dioxide is vital in keeping the planet warm and able to sustain life. Moreover, plants are the only organisms in the ecosystem which produces their own food. This way, plants are able to supply energy and necessary nutrients either directly or indirectly to other living organisms (Bourzac, 2017).

Conclusion

In sum, photosynthesis is important on earth since plants are able to sustain the ecosystem by proving oxygen, nutrients, and energy to the entire living organisms. Plants also use photosynthesis in balancing the air and temperatures in the atmosphere hence making the planet livable.
