This paper seeks to provide a comprehensive review of Jamie Grierson’s article, IPP Sentencing regime in England and Wales called ‘deeply harmful.’ The article seeks to highlight the plight of offenders incarcerated for public protection. Even though imprisonment for public protection, IPP, sentencing was disbanded in 2012, there are more than 2223 prisoners servicing the sentence (Grierson, 2019). Those released are put on a probation license indefinitely, and approximately 1206 released prisoners on licenses have so far been recalled. Subsequent sections of the paper provide a synthesis of the article highlighting the main issues discussed. The article is quite essential since it highlights the injustices within the criminal justice system, which has brought a painful burden to friends and families of incarcerated individuals. Moreover, the article campaigns for the resettlement of individuals on IPP sentences. Therefore, Grierson (2019), seeks to address the injustice that has since separated numerous families within Europe and the United States. However, the article failed to provide recommendations on how the families of IPP prisoners can contribute to the resettlement and rehabilitation of their kin to prevent recidivism. Additionally, the article only provides statistics on the number of IPPs imposed over the years but does not correlate the incidence rate of IPPs with the incidence rate of depression among families of incarcerated individuals. I like the article since the author acknowledges the fact that IPP sentences have had negative implications for friends and families of prisoners serving a sentence. Moreover, the author appreciates the fact that legislation should be enacted to put right the injustices committed to inmates under the outlawed sentence. However, I dislike the article since it fails to highlight the prisons in which inmates serving IPP sentences are incarcerated. Therefore, the article provides a generalization of statistics that cannot be useful in providing justice to prisoners and affected families.
