Introduction

Water scarcity is a situation where there is a lack of sufficient available water resources to meet the needs of water use in a location. Water scarcity is a global issue that is a well-documented issue where millions experience it at least once a year (Postel, 2014). Pakistan is among the countries with widespread water scarcity. Water scarcity in Pakistan has been an issue for a long time.

Body

Pakistan ranks third among countries that are facing severe water shortage (Baloch, 2018). Water scarcity in Pakistan is as a result of climate change, urbanization, lack of political will to remedy the issue, rampant population growth in the country and poor water management. The government has taken keen measures to solve the issue by establishing a budget allocation for sanitation and hygiene programs. The government has been successful in remedying the issue on water scarcity as the access to water has increased to 91% of the population ( Realizing the human right to water and sanitation, 2015). The government faces challenges in remedying the issue since they fail to realize that access to water is a right for every citizen in their country ( Realizing the human right to water and sanitation, 2015 ). The budgetary committee also fails to allocate enough funds for the realization of access to water.

My water footprint is 1204 gallons per day while the household footprint is 2409 gallons/day, which is higher than the average American consumption. To reduce my water consumption, I plan on reducing the time I leave the faucet on and taking shorter showers.

Water usage before the action plan

Itemized household usage  Gallons
Shower & Bath  85
Toilet  48
Sink  240
Dishes by hand  20
Dishwasher  12
Laundry  12
Lawn  400
Outside & pool  387
total  1204

Water usage after-action plan

Itemized household usage  Gallons
Shower & Bath  45
Toilet  19
Sink  45
Dishes by hand
Dishwasher
Laundry
Lawn  300
Outside & pool  231
total  660

Conclusion

After implementing the action plan, my water usage per gallon reduced significantly. My water consumption was lower than that of the average American. With the new plan, the usage reduces significantly to about a quarter of the average water usage which will have a positive impact by reducing water usage. In Pakistan, the average water usage is 100 gallons which when compared to my new water usage varies significantly. Evidently, those in Pakistan suffer from water scarcity; thus, there needs to be a new policy to remedy the water situation in Pakistan.
