The article presents a manifold discussion of the journey to racial equality, right from the days of slavery to emancipation and beyond. The writer presents his ideas about the current situation of the black people residing in America through reflecting on prominent personalities in history. As he discusses the contributions by Booker T. Washington, it becomes clear that the joy of gaining education was not altogether unmarred. Reading through, we understand the emptiness and loneliness that drove the freed men to self-realization. That in those gloomy forests of his struggling, the black man’s soul rose before him, and he gained a revelation of his power, of his mission. It is agreeable that this newly found realization affirmed that to achieve and stamp his place in the world, he must be himself, and not another. He saw that his freedom from slavery did not translate into economic freedom as poverty massively afflicted him. The author points out a sad truth that being a poor man and a poor race in a land of dollars is the very lowest of hardships. The black man felt the weight of his ignorance and lack of business as the things that shackled him as a free man.
The years of deprivation and suffering led to the conviction that education would open the doors to economic emancipation. It was the hope and determination that gave them strength to fight for more and more opportunities. Through massive efforts and compromise on some aspects, some form of training for black children and youth was attained. They had found perspective through their resolve to refuse the lowly position with courage. Ultimately, gaining education seemed not to deliver the expected results. As a matter of fact, he had entered into competition with wealthy, skilled and influential neighbors. It appears that the training had disfranchised him as he still lags behind economically. Stressing on this fact, he poses a question, “do these graduates succeed in real life?” It seems that the battle for economic emancipation is far from over.
