Symbol One

In T. S. Eliot’s poem, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”, a patient is compared to the evening sky “ patient etherized upon a table” . Based on the context, the author is comparing the impotences of the sky and the patient. During the day, the sky dominates the earth but at night, the sky is weak, dark, and powerless.

Symbol Two

In T. S. Eliot’s poem, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”, the streets are compared to a

tedious argument ”. As a symbol, the tedious argument is used to reflect a lot of unproductive activity such as running through a labyrinth.

Symbol Three

In E E Cummings poem “In Just” the feet of the balloonman is described as “ goat-footed ” (Cummings, nd). From the context, the symbolism means nimble, fast, and able to overcome obstacles just as goats can easily jump and climb rocky places.

Question 2: Modern man according to both Hemingway and TS Eliot

According to both Hemingway and TS Eliot, the modern man is no longer the perfect, impeccable, and humane being that God had created, but has rather grown grotesque. Important attributes such as loving, kindness, and gentleness have been lost, mainly due to the harshness that the modern man has to live in. The modern man is more of a beast than a human being.

Question Three: Article

The article by Solomon (2014) is a powerful rebuke of the First World War especially in regard to its nature and purpose. The article begins with how benign and peaceful the world was before the war then shows both how ugly the war was, more so the wastage of human life and humanity itself that it brought. Finally, it shows that all that pain, suffering, and wastage was in vain because there was never a justifiable reason for the war. The soul of humanity died and for no reason at all. The article enabled an understanding of the concept that modernism had on the modern man. Most of the modernist authors including E. E. Cummings, Ernest Hemingway, TS Eliot and F. Scott Fitzgerald had experienced the world and humanity before and after the First World War hence could tell just how much change there was. Solomon, (2014) creates an impression of how that change came about.
