Cleveland Clinic Case Study

Cleveland Clinic has seen a massive transformation from the provision of the services to the structure and leadership. A journey through the history of the organization speaks of a committed institution that is patient-centered with a lot of determination to provide the best through innovation and creativity. From the case, Cleveland Clinic exhibits numerous strengths, numerous opportunities with limited threats and weaknesses. The table below showcases the hospital’s SWOT analysis.

  • Quality staffs and leaders-it has a history of quality leaders such as Dr. Cosgrove who transformed the culture and structure from hierarchical to multidisciplinary culture and structure.

  • High technology such as being the first medical institution to implement the electronic healthcare system technology

Weaknesses

  • The hospital can abuse mode of payments such as pay-per services. The hospital needs to set a standard payment that suits its operations

  • Government regulations such as the use of Medicaid and Medicare have an impact on the institution’s operations. Cleveland management has to adopt them to suits the regulations

  • None competitive salaries model for the staffs such as performance based-salaries can work against the hospital by demotivating some workers.

  • The patient-centered approach adopted by Cleveland is likely to reduce profit margin in case it is not well managed.

Opportunities

  • Setting up universities for development. Such institutions offer the hospital fresh and talented workers who have the culture of the organization and would find it easy to cooperate with the hospital culture.

  • Competitive wages: the organization has different models for compensating the worker, such as pay per-services. These are strategies which can be made flexible and be lowered to act as a competitive advantage in the market.

Cleveland Clinic is excellent in many aspects; however, it needs to improve its payments system as this poses a considerable weakness that can bring issues soon. The organization also needs to collaborate more with international bodies to penetrate more into the global market. Cleveland derives its significance performance from its philosophy of patient first. The patient first approach has made its management to redefine the organization structure to suit the patients’ needs. The hospital uses a unit-based structure that orients at offering multi-dripline work climates. The unit-based structure is the core of coordination, consultation, and innovation in the hospital. Financially, the organization has performed beyond its expectation. A whopping $466 million in operating income in the year 2014 speaks of its financial energy. Its international performance is excellent, and people attribute it to innovation. Advanced technology also plays a crucial role in enhancing the organization performance. It is one of the organizations to implement patient electronic record documentation, and since then, technology is at the heart of its operations.

Cleveland Clinic, however, must work on the manner of remitting the staffs. They need to adopt performance measures and also come up with ways of motivating the staffs to achieve and improve on their performance. However, doing so by using a performance based-payment approach may work against the hospital. Some staffs may get discouraged by such a system, and this may not show a good picture of the society and potential workers. Adopting a standard payment would solve this matter. It also needs to collaborate more with other international bodies as this will provide the hospital with an easy way to penetrate more geographical areas at the international stage.
