The Mathematics of Sports - How Math is Used in Sports

Mathematics is applied in the daily life of everyone and is a huge part of solving solutions. It plays a role in the efficiency of sports. Computers and computer applications are used in devices that have been made essential in almost all sports activities. Mathematics is used by most coaches to ensure that the sportsmen use their energy and skill to an optimum level in oreder to win a competition (Baca & Stöckl, 2015). 

In a golf swing, a jump shot, a ball pass and a home run, the sports movements require mathematical calculations by the athlete. The size of a field and the distance to time ratio can be used by a footballer in determining how long and efficient it will be to run through a field, tackle the opponents on the way, and how he or she bends in to angle a score or a pass and make a goal thereby achieving a win. A golfer can apply some form of mathematical mechanics in his or her swing so as to ensure the ball flies in the right direction and land so close to the hole which is the target. Pitchers and batters become better by practicing on a certain angle in their pitch or batting respectively.

Sports experts can analyze athletes’ movement later to find out why they either won or lost and what can be done to improve in the next competition (Dabnichki & Baca, 2008).The movements of most players are videotaped and saved in a computer. There is special software that analyses the movement of the legs, arms and head. This is called motion analysis. Graphs are made in the computer to compare the movements with those of others. This is mostly done to analyze the performance of top players and athletes so as to come up with data that can be used by anyone who is interested in the type of sport or wants to be better in their game. The software can also capture the movement of the ball. This system can give immediate feedback to the coach who also gives instructions to the player to improve performance in the game. 

Statistics about teams and statistics on every player are kept in spreadsheets to use when anticipating the results of a game. This is based on the choice of players and used to compare with the strengths and weaknesses on the opponents team. This computer application can be used to manipulate numbers and store valuable information on sports activities. In race tracks for dog, horse and skates the field is designed in a way that they are not equal-quadrant. In bicycle track racing, they are banked straight-aways and tracks. If a person moves in the inside of the tracks, they are more likely to win (Baca & Stöckl, 2015). 

Big screens and speakers that allow for additional excitement during games, are strategically installed in stadiums and arenas. These screens can be used to show advertisements and display appealing messages that keep the fans interested and pumped for the whole game. They are used for advertisement and education on the current issues affecting sports. These big screens are controlled by several computers that keep statistics on the games and data about the players in the game. People sitting far away from the pitch can still enjoy the game as though they had front row seats. The screens also show repeats on a significant events by a player that the fans might have missed or those events that simply thrill the fans. For example: making a great pass, scoring a goal or getting a Red card. 

Computers are the main access to internet and that is where future games are announced. A person can easily go to a search engine and visit sport websites where the games are freely displayed and discussed on openly. A fan can even make predictions and book tickets online to see the game. People who cannot make it to the game can watch online by streaming a live recording of the game. A fan can read team news and purchase team merchandise online so as to show their loyalty when the day of the game arrives. 

There are swimmers who use simulation software to improve their capability of moving swiftly in water. They measure the turbulence of water to measure their anticipated effort so as to move faster without getting a muscle crump. Turbulence of the water can be reduced by the position of arms and legs while swimming. Water turbulence can negatively affect the movement of a swimmer (Gallian, 2010). 

In some advanced settings, there are computer chips which are placed in skiers so that judges who keep scores on their performance can be able to do so while still on the ground. They do not have to use binoculars or stay in the planes. The chips transfer prompt data which can then be used to determine and analyze the performance. 

Coaches in soccer teams draw battling orders so as to ensure the team is in the best position to pass the ball to each other and have a smooth score. Basketball players station themselves in the best positions to shoot the ball into the net. The magnitude of leagues that are played periodically requires mathematics so that the teams can be paired systematically and by using the laws of probability. With many types of games coming up and being followed, most sport management systems have to calculate the various units that involve a game to make the process smoother (Dabnichki & Baca, 2008). 

Data gathering and information keeping on scores and game schedules are done in microcomputers which save a lot of time and space as opposed to the former manual forms of storing data on sports. 

There is a huge business in the betting of sports for example in horseracing and on soccer games. Any type of game is betted on using the internet from any location. Bets require an internet connection and a computer. Updates about the game occur concurrently with the game. This in turn makes more people follow the games with their money at stake. People who were once never interested in sports suddenly develop the urge to follow on games and schedules which are readily online. 

Video games enable people who cannot physically play sports enjoy a game by being a part in it. The person gets to play with and against a virtual teammate or opponent. The games too have scores and crowns. These games are normally inspired by the real teams that exist in sports and can even acquire names of the real players and teams and impersonate them. They are mainly played online and by the use of computers and game pads. 

A coach will often look up the percentage of players wins in former competitions before taking them into the team. He will study the documented recording of players so as to know in which areas need improvement or more practice. Players need to know the percentage of goals or throws needed in order to be able to negotiate their salary increment and keep an upward trend of performance. Table values are drawn and statistics are stored graphically. In athletic competitions, the participants focus on distance, speed and circumference if running around a circular race track (Gallian, 2010).
