Abstract
Mental health is one of the issues facing the society. These conditions do not select age or gender. The “Then Came You” film illustrates the life of teenagers and how they are affected by mental health problems in their daily lives. The life situations responsible are portrayed and how these characters handle health problems. The movie has lesson relevant to nursing on how to manage mental health problems and overcome fears, to lead a normal and healthy life.
Areas in the Movie that Relate to Mental Health
The film “Then Came You” portray the mental health issues in life of teenagers. Calvin is diagnosed as a hypochondriac by his doctor. He lived in constant fear of death, which hindered him from normal life. As a baggage handler at the airport, Calvin was attracted to a flight attendant, Izzy. However, Calvin could not approach her as he could not interact with her appropriately due to fear of death (Birgit, Tak, Rosmalen, & Voshaar, 2018). Calvin denied the hypochondriac diagnosis, and his doctor advised him to attend a cancer support group so that he could get a different perspective.

Calvin is seen as depressed. It happened after he broke up with Izzy. The situation affected him so much that he stopped going to work. It had to take his father to convince him to go back to work. Calvin had struggled to get Izzy to go out with him but was too worried about the fear of death that he did not ask her out. However, Skye helped Calvin overcome the problem, and it was very devastating for him due to breaking up, leading to depression, a mental condition.
Calvin’s mother portrays a person with mental health problems. Calvin told Skye that he stopped celebrating his birthdays to avoid saddening his mother. Calvin stated that he had a twin sister who died. Grief and death frustration can be used to explain the mental problem that Calvin’s mother was suffering from.
Skye can be illustrated as a mentally unstable individual. She had cancer that prompted her to make a list of things she wanted to accomplish before death (IMDb, 2019). Skye even convinces Calvin to rob a store, start a business, crash a house party, and support arts. It shows that Skye was trying to escape the reality of death.
A mental disturbance can also be seen with Izzy, who was disappointed with herself because of her decisions. After Izzy got hurt by Calvin, she went and had sex with Will, losing her virginity, which she admits that it was too fast and regretted it.
Relevance to Nursing
The film illustrates fear that people face in daily life, which leads to mental health problems. When dealing with a mental condition, nurses should first understand the challenge to help diagnose and treat. In the case of Calvin’s mother, for example, the treatment approach should relate to death and grief. The nurses can create therapy programs to help individuals overcome their fears in life and acceptance, which reduces cases of mental health problems (Birgit, Tak, Rosmalen, & Voshaar, 2018).
Diagnosis of the Main Character, Subjective and Objective Information
The first nursing diagnosis was hypochondriac as indicated by Calvin’s physician. It is a mental condition where an individual is excessively worried about being seriously ill. It was based on subjective data where Calvin stated that he could not interact with other people normally, such as Izzy, a flight attendant he had interest in, due to fear of dying. Calvin is in denial that he had the condition. Objective data was from the MRI indicated that Calvin was healthy and had nothing to worry about.
The other nursing diagnosis was based on related factors and cause of response. The objective data portrayed a depressed Calvin, who preferred to be isolated. Subjective data indicated that Calvin lost his twin sister which could explain a factor related to grief and loss, when he lost Izzy after the breakup. The fear of death that Calvin faces is in response to losing his sister (Salce, 2019).
The last nursing diagnosis was based on signs and symptoms Calvin exhibited. The subjective data is illustrated by the fear of heights seen in the scene where Calvin and Skye are at a swimming pool and Calvin’s legs were shaking. The objective data proved that Calvin would experience symptoms such as shaking when faced with fear. Promoting a personal initiative to overcome fear methods is used; Calvin facing the fear of heights is assisted by Izzy, where they take a plane trip.
