One of the extreme faulty listening behaviors that I tend to use especially when I am tired is the selective hearing. In this scenario, I only respond to areas of the speaker's remarks that interest me. Another faulty listening mechanism that I employ especially when the person talking is not so friendly is ambushing. In this case, I listen carefully, but only because I anticipate that the speaker is collecting information to attack what I have just said savagely. The two are my major faulty listening behaviors, and I tend to use them under different circumstances. I had recently used the selective hearing mechanism when I attended a talk regarding leadership. Since I was interested in the way the speaker was delivering his speech, I only picked the areas that I thought was of help to me. I use ambush method when I am in an argument with my friends who tend to oppose my stand on various issues vehemently.

Despite having my flaws in listening, I have also come to notice that other people also possess faulty listening behaviors of various kinds. One which is most common in people is the pseudo-listening. In this case, a person appears to be attentive, but in the real sense, they are ignoring or partially listening to the speaker. People who employ this strategy are mainly those who find the speaker dull, or in other cases; they are lost in thoughts. Another insensitive way of listening is when an individual practice what is known as stage-hogging. Such people are always trying to turn the topic of conversation to suit them. They do not appreciate when the topic does not center on them and appear as if they disregard other people's side of view. Therefore, all these behaviors make an individual a faulty listener.
