I think the most prominent values that influence my nursing practice and interaction with others are patience and the demonstration of care. In this sense, patience means being tolerant, resilient, and even accommodative. On the other hand, demonstration of care implies showing feelings of empathy or trying to place oneself in someone else’s situation; you ask yourself how it feels like to be in a certain situation. Patients are usually brought to healthcare centers suffering from different health conditions, and they need nurses who are patient with them, as well as demonstrating that they care.
One time I worked in a rural healthcare facility, which mainly cared for elderly patients. Particularly, I found one elderly woman quite nagging, at least during my first interaction with her. I did not have much experience then. Each time, I attended to her; she would want me to explain the kind of medication or treatment I was administering to her. Additionally, she would call me quite often to lament about her situation. During the first days, I would go home exhausted. However, I realized that my patience and demonstration of care were the core values being tested. I had to change my attitude and build trust with the patient.

According to Rasheed (2015), self-awareness is a very important tool for nurse/client relationship. That means that one has to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses to be able to provide care better. In this case, I realized that I was not patient enough with the patient. I needed to demonstrate that I cared enough. Of course, I was new at the place, and because the patient had been attended to by other nurses, I needed to make her trust me. Nurses need to make patients feel safe to promote their recovery (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2013). From my experience, I have learnt that I have to build a good rapport with patients, listen to them, and demonstrate care.
