Sociological studies have a keener focus on the negativities of divorce among modern families. Among the developed nations, the United States of America has the highest rates of divorce, which has jeopardized the positive development of the children from the families involved. The research will focus on the various implications of the issue from a sociological perspective and how the parties involved can have the aftermath of divorce more comfortable for them. The research question for the research is as follows. 

Research question: What are the negative impacts of divorce on children? 

Overall Study Design 

The research will be qualitative. The primary reason for the performance of a qualitative study is that it primarily focuses on the behaviors and the opinions of the research participants. The research will be focused on the negative implications of divorce on the children. Therefore, it will be quintessential to collect the children's feelings based on divorce and how it affects them. The researchers will assume a narrative research design to collect the data. The method of data collection will be interviewing. Interviews will be conducted physically, on the phone and via emails. The interviews will enable the researchers to collect the opinions of the children regarding divorce. Moreover, interviewing will enable the ease of collection of the data, which will reduce the time used in the data collection method. Some of the demerits of interviewing that the researchers will be aware of are the increased expenses in traveling as they interview the children across the various parts of the United States of America. The analysis of the collected data will follow the thematic content analysis procedures that will come up with the various aspects of negative implications of divorce among the American children. The thematic analysis will thus cover the broad topics associated with the implications of divorce on American children.

Hypotheses to Be Tested 

The following hypotheses will be tested in the study to find out the negative impacts of divorce on children. 

H1: the rising cases of divorce in the United States of America have a negative implication on the social wellbeing of the children. 

H0: the rising cases of divorce in the United States of America do not have a negative implication on the social wellbeing of the children. 

H1: divorce leads to financial distress among American children. 

H0: divorce does not lead to financial distress among American children. 

H1: children from divorced parents develop psychological and emotional issues that hinder their academic and professional advancements in their future. 

H0: children from divorced parents do not develop psychological and emotional issues that hinder their academic and professional advancements in their future. 

Variables and How to Operationalize Them 

The variables involved in the study of the negative implications of divorce on children will be classified as nominal variables. That is because the variables will not have any natural order unlike the variables in quantitative research, which may be arranged regarding their numerical significance. Furthermore, the variables in the research are not expected to have numerical values since the study will be qualitative. Therefore, the level of measurement that will be used on the variables will be the nominal measurement. The independent variable in the research will be the increasing cases of divorce in the United States of America. The dependent variable in the research will be the negative impacts of divorce on the children in the various parts of the United States of America. The analysis of the independent variable from different perspectives by the researchers will indicate changes in the dependent variable. The perspectives used will be the sociological, psychological, financial, and emotional with sociological factors affecting the victims of divorce being the major issue of discussion.
