It is indeed true that the Overland Campaign, the Wilderness Campaign and the Grant's Overland Campaign as is often referred to is instrumentally the price of civil war. It represents a series of battles fought between May and June of 1864 in Virginia. The war was fought between Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant who led the Union armies and Gen. Robert E. Lee who led the Confederate army. In this piece, attention is directed towards the Grant and his tactics in winning the war.
On the 4th of may Grant crossed the Rapidan River as he advanced his troops into the territory of Lee. His intentions here were to place his troops between those of Richmond and Lee which he believed would disarm them. Nonetheless, Lee responded by attacking the Union army intensively in the Battle of the Wilderness whereby Grant lost. He, however, did not know surrender and went back to plan the next attack. He retreated southeast and tried to interpose the Richmond and Lee armies. Nevertheless, in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, the Confederate defensive line proved too strong by inflicting more casualties on Grants army. Grant would attack again in the north in River Anna whereby clever defensive position of Lee’s troops was instrumental in defeating Grant once again but could not trap Grant due to Lee’s illness. As a possessed fighter, Grant stealthily crossed James River and got to Petersburg. The war between June and March of 1865 led to Lee’s troops surrendering and brought the war to an end (Novak, 2014). In this manner, it becomes apparent that the tactics of Grant worked successfully. He remained relentless and eventually took over Petersburg and crippled the efforts of Lee bring to an end the war.
