Why did you choose this song?

I chose the song 'Love Myself' by Hailee Steinfeld because of its strong message on self-appreciation. Self-love is a form of appreciation of that develops from activities that support individual’s overall growth. It means prioritizing own happiness and well-being. I also chose it because it means taking care of personal requirements and not foregoing your well-being to make others happy.

What message do you think is being conveyed in the song?

The lines below convey the primary message of the song.

I’m gonna put my body first

And love me so hard ‘til it hurts

I know how to scream out the words” (Lines 28-30)

Gonna love myself, no, I don’t need anybody else

Anytime, day or night

(I love me)” (Lines 37-39)

The song tries to convey the message about self-confidence and empowerment. It emphasizes on taking care of oneself and treating oneself. It stresses not needing other people's assistance to feel good and the power in providing for oneself. It highlights the feeling of confidence about oneself and being in a position to provide for yourself. It highlights the power of investing in and loving oneself.

In what environments would this song be appropriate? A high school dance? At work? In a fitness center? On the radio? Why or why not?

The song ‘Love Myself' would be appropriate in many environments worldwide. It would be right in a fitness center as individuals would love to listen to music about self-love as they work towards keeping fit. The song would also be suitable on the radio. People of different ages listen to the radio, and would most of them would love the music that would talk about self-confidence. It would also be appropriate in a high school dance because it involves the young. It would feel good to sing how they work towards being able to provide for themselves. Additionally, the song would apply to youth's birthday parties or other occasions. They would get the message that it’s good to love oneself and be proud of who they are.

Based on your interpretation of the “message,” discuss 1-2 similarities or differences in how the song was portrayed in the video.

In the music video, Hailee Steinfeld and other people are dancing excitedly on the streets. There is a similarity between my interpretation and the video as they are self-confident. The writing on the mirrors "#LoveMyself" and how the people admire themselves also show self-appreciation.

What did you learn about the subtle or overt love/sex/etc. The message presented in your song?

The love presented in the song is personal. I learned that personal love is excellent, and it makes one feel appreciated even in the absence of anyone else.

Do you think the lyrics could possibly impact a person’s behavior, especially a younger, more impressionable person?

I think the lyrics would impact a young girl's behavior to make them feel confident about themselves. They would learn that it is good to provide for themselves without waiting for others to do so.
