Despite there being numerous awareness and laws protecting people against discrimination, people are not yet free from discriminatory acts. The constitution mandates that everyone is equal before the laws and should be given equal opportunities in employment. Unfortunately, reports of gender discrimination from the Southlake Hospital has made the University of Toronto launch an investigation. The chief of the emergency department was accused of discriminating against gender given that he did not hire any female physician in a span of 16 years in the department. 1 The university sends its students to the hospital for their practical and clinical experiences only for them to be discriminated due to their gender.
The event is critical as it highlights the existing problem of discrimination in the professional domain. Despite the constitution stipulating that every individual should be provided with equal opportunities, discrimination is clearly evident and in existence. The silent killer has permeated every aspect of man and is gradually tormenting people while mocking the constitution. While little is being done on preventing discriminatory acts, the launching of investigation would highlight the seriousness of the problem and perhaps prevent similar cases from happening. Gender discrimination affects job seekers, the public, and institutions since it hinders diversity that promotes innovation.

In my opinion, legal action should be taken against the perpetrator who failed to hire female physicians in the department. Other actions such as firing officials should also be done in order to show the gravity of violating the law. At the same time, the hospital should be held responsible and could either change their management or enforce strict rules of equality in employment. After all, they are tasked with the mandate of overseeing that everything is done accordingly.
