Typically, when we think that we are better prepared for the occurrence of incidents, we tend to fail to determine the vulnerabilities of a community rigorously. According to Abrahamsson and Tehler (2013), a vulnerability assessment is integral in ensuring accurate identification of a community’s needs and spearheading the determination of effective incident preparedness procedures. Ultimately, establishing such best-practices reduce the extent of the ramifications associated with the occurrence of the incident. I must also acknowledge that your assumption that the vulnerability is heightened because of the population density is intriguing. Therefore, the fact that the area experiences an influx of people necessitates that the adoption of adequate preparedness and response procedures aimed at reducing the extent of damage associated with the occurrence of the incident. I think your recommended course of action is admirable since it may guarantee improved preparedness. The process of evaluating the vulnerabilities of a community can be derailed. In most cases, persons tasked with the mandate to review the vulnerabilities of the community may focus on disasters of massive proportions while overlooking small calamitous events. Such an approach would be misleading since the departments responsible for dealing with emergency incidents will not be optimally prepared to deal with disasters of all proportions. Moreover, I am intrigued by your approach to disaster management and preparedness. I believe that the success of reducing the ramifications of a calamitous incident is by employing public education. Therefore, since the world is fast-shifting and most people rely heavily on social media, I will recommend that a public awareness campaign via social media is adopted. PrepareCenter.org (2019) affirms that taking advantage of social media platforms is integral in fostering disaster preparedness.
